Rolls-Royce Teases New Wraith Coupe

British luxury carmaker Rolls-Royce released the first teaser image of their new Wraith luxury coupe today. Set to make its public debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March, Rolls isn't announcing specifics at this point. But amidst their enigmatic descriptions of its "extraordinary power and dynamic promise," two tangible details stand out: it's named after the 1938 Rolls Royce Wraith, and more importantly, will be "most powerful Rolls-Royce in history."

While the original teaser was as shady and ethereal as the car's namesake, we maxed out the brightness and contrast, and found that the Rolls photo retouchers left the entire top half of the car uncensored. With a long, sloping hood, an equally curvy roofline, and a massive C-pillar, compared to the Ghost and Phantom the new Wraith appears to be more in-line with Bentley's Continental GT?an odd, but fascinating mix of ultra luxury and high performance.

Admittedly, the market for six-figure luxury cars is small?and for 5000-pound performance monsters even smaller?but it'll be interesting to see how Rolls-Royce incorporates horsepower and 0-60 times into their brand of understated opulence.

Special interests gather for own inaugural parties

WASHINGTON (AP) -- While most Americans caught distant glimpses of President Barack Obama's second inauguration festivities from their living room TVs and on the Internet, a privileged set of celebrities and special interests got pampered access Monday at exclusive soirees just blocks from the ceremonies.

The parties are a January tradition, where high-powered lobbying shops and law firms open up their offices for clients, legislators and officials, affording opportunities to renew ties and lay the groundwork for lobbying and deal-making. The gatherings in K Street and Pennsylvania Avenue suites offered catered buffets and even balcony views as the commander in chief's caravan rolled by, venues supplemented by high-priced hotel rooms, gala balls and invitation-only parties.

As the A-listers streamed in Monday, Washington's political world had already adapted to a scaled-back version of the festivities of four years ago, when more than 1.5 million people packed the National Mall. Lobbying shops got fewer ticket requests from corporate clients and office parties shrank to appeal to smaller crowds.

Four years ago, Manatt, Phelps & Phillips held its traditional inauguration day party for clients at its downtown D.C. offices. On Monday, the firm opened its doors early as a "launch pad" for guests, a pit stop to warm up, drop off bags, recharge IPhones and toss down a bloody Mary before heading out into the morning chill.

The 9th floor balcony at the K&L Gates law offices on 16th Street offered a pristine view of the parade route during the inauguration, but guests preferred the party on the first floor, avoiding the cold by snacking on chili and cheese while watching the proceedings on four wall-length video screens. A life-sized cardboard Obama replica was available for photos while the real Obama launched into his second inaugural speech.

"The second inaugural's always much more subdued so your events have to be subdued as well," said firm partner Emanuel L. Rouvelas, who has hosted or attended inauguration parties dating back to the Nixon era.

Downtown Washington's hotels were jammed, though not to capacity, and its closed-off streets were invaded with hundreds of gleaming limousines. Nearby Dulles International Airport anticipated roughly 300 private aircraft for the weekend, though significantly fewer than the 700 planes from last time. Hotels offered top-dollar packages with views of the day's events, and some guests asked staffers to clear out excess furniture so they could pack in more friends.

At one end of Pennsylvania Avenue ? at the Willard Intercontinental, overlooking the White House ? corporations and associations booked many of the rooms with the best views to entertain clients. The 165-year-old hotel boasts that President Abraham Lincoln stayed there before his 1860 inauguration.

"Seize every moment to surprise and delight our customers," manager James Ryan told his team during a planning meeting to which The Associated Press was invited.

Lowered expectations may be keeping away some big spenders. Washington's W Hotel, which boasts prime parade-watching real estate on 15th Street near the White House, touted its $50,000 "E-Wow" suite for a minimum four-night stay, complete with butler's pantry, virtual fireplace and $100,000 worth of jewelry on loan for the weekend. But as of Sunday night, the suite had not been booked.

Washington power-players have dozens of unofficial balls to pick from, and they're usually thrown by state parties or interest groups. The official inaugural committee is banning corporate sponsorships, but that hasn't stopped big companies and other interests from headlining events elsewhere: Household names like AT&T Inc., Merck & Co., the Sierra Club and Greenpeace are all sponsoring events, according to an AP review of invitations collected by the nonprofit Sunlight Foundation.

Obama's second-term inauguration can't compete with the historic appeal of his 2009 swearing-in. But some lobbying veterans blame the lowered profile of corporate parties on his administration's self-proclaimed ethics stance. Four years ago, Obama tightened regulations on "revolving door" officials and inveighed against excessive lobbying.

Even with tougher rules, the White House has still hosted corporate interests and lobbyists at times, but officials say Obama's ethics efforts have had a strong impact. "President Obama has done more in the past four years to close the revolving door of special interest influence than any president before him," said White House spokesman Eric H. Schultz.

"Many of the lobbyists I know are far less warm on Obama than they were four years ago," said Wright H. Andrews Jr., a former president of the American League of Lobbyists. "They're understandably displeased with his vilification of lobbyists."

Limousine rentals were still doing brisk business, judging by the elegant stretches clogging downtown streets. Several limousine services advertised inaugural specials at as much as $140 an hour, touting plush 20-passenger Lincolns and Humvees equipped with large-screen televisions and minibars stocked with champagne. The D.C. Taxicab Commission expected to process 1,500 special inauguration chauffeur permits, as far away as Florida and Oklahoma, said spokesman Neville Waters.

He said limo companies typically import hundreds of extra sedans for the inauguration from outside Washington, mandating a need for special permits. But Waters said the city expected fewer limos navigating downtown D.C. this weekend compared to four year ago.

"I guess it's kind of a been-there, done-that kind of thing," he said.

Three Percent: In Conversation about Queneau's "Exercises in Style"

One of the coolest releases of the winter has to be the new version of Raymond Queneau?s Exercises in Style?the classic Oulipian text in which Queneau tells and retells the same story of two men who get on a bus and have a minor row, ending with one telling the other to replace a button on his overcoat. The original version had 99 of these variations told in styles ranging from ?Notation? to ?Word game? to ?Cockney? to ?Awkward.? It?s a testament to Queneau?s ability as a writer, and just as interestingly, it sort of blows apart the idea of how many ways a story can be told?and how style can be more important than content.

Anyway, this new version, which celebrates the book?s 65th Anniversary, New Directions added in twenty-five exercises left out of the original, AND included new exercises written by Jesse Ball, Blake Butler, Amelia Gray, Shane Jones, Jonathan Lethem, Ben Marcus, Harry Mathews, Lynne Tillman, Frederic Tuten, and Enrique Vila-Matas.

Anyway, anyway, to mark the release of this, ND posted a two-part conversation between Daniel Levin Becker and Chris Clarke about Queneau, Exercises in Style, and the Oulipo in general. You can read part one here, and click here for part two. And below are a few interesting bits:

Daniel Levin Becker: Maybe we should start with the book a little bit, if only to make it topical, and then go more general from there? For the sake of doing what I just suggested, here?s a question: what do you think is the particular relevance of Exercises in Style today?

Chris Clarke: I don?t know if I can speak so much to a ?particular? relevance, it might be more appropriate in my mind to speak of a ?continued? relevance. For me, Exercises in Style is the great reminder that there is no such thing as ideology-free writing. Even the simplest text, the most banal or inconsequential piece of writing, carries marks of style that affect the reader in one way or another. I don?t know if it?s fair to say that this is more important to understand now than it was in 1947, but it seems that way sometimes. Could just be a bias of time and place. But that was always the way Exercises affected me, by making me conscious of all the different ways it could affect me, and by reminding me that in its case, like in most, the whole process is intentional. Beyond that, well, I can?t not mention it, the other continued relevance of Exercises to me is simply that it?s a window into how much fun language can be, even when used to describe something as banal as a story of bus rides and button-shifting. Even the dullest crosstown trip on the S-bus can be utterly and infinitely fascinating.

DLB: I like your point about ideology. I guess what I had in the back of my mind when I asked that was something about the fragmentation of writing these days, literary or otherwise, such that fluency (so to speak) in a number of registers maybe counts a little more than it used to, because you don?t want to tweet in the same voice as you write an essay, a blog post, an email, etc. In any case, I don?t (maybe Tao Lin does). It feels a little overserious to claim that there?s all that much of a difference between an email and a blog post, but then maybe that?s where the ideology part of it comes in. [. . .]

Michael Barron: Chris, you say that there is no such thing as ideology-free writing, that everything has a semblance of style. I am curious to know how a style in the French, say ?Promotional,? actually changes when rendered in English. I am also curious to know from both of you which exercises from the contributions by contemporary writers struck you as the most true to Queneau?s vision? And from there, I am wondering if you think that Queneau had a certain umbrella style that pervades all of his exercises?

CC: I thought the new contributions were a lot of fun. To me, closest to Queneau?s method might be Frederic Tuten?s ?Beat.? I thought Shane Jones? ?Assistance? added a neat bit of insight into the narrator, in the same way that Queneau?s ?There were oodles . . .? does. As far as style crossing over from language to language . . . well, it?s one of the goals of the translator to find the closest equivalent (s)he can. Of course, no two languages operate the same way, so it?s perhaps never a perfect transaction, but it?s something translators are very conscious of. Something like ?Promotional? and its French counterpart ?Publicitaire? are always going to have some little differences to them, some of them because of differences in the language and the way style works in those given languages, some because of cultural differences. In this case, a radio ad is going to have a different ring to it in a North American (or British) context than it would in a French context, just as much as it will be read differently now compared to how it would have come across 65 years ago. Also, in this case, the very last line in the French text is a riff on the slogan of a French battery called Wonder, which was so popular that it spawned a variety of parodies, including the slogan of a newspaper. The English reader isn?t going to see that in the English text, as the reference is no longer physically there, and even if it were, he likely wouldn?t react the same way because he doesn?t necessarily have the same cultural references at his disposal. In cases like this, the intertextuality can?t quite be the same. [. . .]

CC: Okay, here?s something I?ve always wanted to ask an Oulipian. If I were to tell you I was translating a piece of your writing that involved a particular constraint, my question (depending of course on the particular piece) would be, would you tell me that I should be more concerned about translating the finished piece of writing, or about reproducing the constraint used in creating the piece? For an easy example, a ?faithful? literary translation of a lipogram with no ?e? that attempted to stay close to the text would almost certainly contain ?e??s.

DLB: [Trying to ignore the well-of-course-this-changes-everything implications of it being my writing,] I?d say it?s absolutely more important to reproduce the constraint or procedure than to reproduce the meaning. That is assuming, of course, that the constraint was instrumental in engendering the text, which almost has to be the case for the text to be like, good (in this admittedly peculiar entre-nous kind of way). If you were to translate La disparition for the story alone, you?d have a novel that?s not ultimately all that good; if you were to translate it without using the most common letter in the target language, you might not succeed in making the narrative/details ?faithful? enough for it to be considered the same work, but I?d argue you?d have come much closer to preserving what?s essential about the book. (Fun aside: I recently translated Perec?s dream journal, which contains a few references to La disparition, and had an almost visceral aversion to the idea of rendering it in English as A Void, just because to me those are such manifestly different books. (The publisher has probably overridden my call on that; only time will tell.)) Anyway, an unofficial thought-test tells me this holds true for most constraint-based (or shall we say structure-forward) works that come to mind?imagine translating Abish?s Alphabetical Africa for content alone. Pointless! The pointlessness of the exercise would be rivaled only by the creepy colonialist overtones that rose to the surface.

MB: Hey now, we publish Alphabetical Africa . . .

So fun. And all this Oulipo talk makes me more excited to get to Scott and Lauren?s The End of Oulipo? (which I didn?t get to last weekend, since I had to read Merchants of Culture for class and am finishing up B?ll?s The Safety Net. Oh, and I read Hilda Hilst?s fascinating The Obscene Madame D, but I?ll talk about that more in a Friday post . . .)

Study: W.Va. high school graduation rate improves

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- About 78 percent of the 17,651 West Virginia high school students who graduated in the spring of 2010 earned their diplomas in four years, matching the national rate, the U.S. Department of Education said in a study released Tuesday.

West Virginia's rate improved from 77 percent during the two previous school years.

About 78 percent of white students graduated on time, while the rates for black and Hispanic students were lower. About 74.5 percent of Hispanic students and about 74 percent of black students earned their diplomas in four years. The rate for Asian and Pacific Islander students was 100 percent.

The state's dropout rate remained at about 4 percent and was higher than the national rate of about 3 percent. The national rate declined from 4 percent during the seven previous academic years, when date was sometimes incomplete or represented averages of states that reported figures.

About 4.6 percent of black and Hispanic students in West Virginia dropped out during the 2009-2010 school year, compared to 4 percent of white students. Less than 1 percent of Asian and Pacific Islander students dropped out.

Male students were more likely to drop out than female students. The dropout rate for male students was 4.4 percent, compared to 3.6 percent for female students.

Overall, students were least likely to drop out during their freshman year. West Virginia's freshman dropout rate was 3.4 percent, compared to 4.1 percent of sophomores, 4.4 percent of juniors and 4.6 percent of seniors.

Nationally, students were more likely to drop out of high school during their senior year, with roughly one in 20 quitting before graduation day.

Improving small business operations with team building strategies ...

January 18, 2013 in Human Resources

Entrepreneurs know that having happy and motivated employees is one of the most important steps of small business human resources.

Entrepreneurs know that having happy and motivated employees is one of the most important goals of small business human resources. Workers that are not dedicated to their companies can drag down operations, so owners know that focusing on improving morale is an effective way of boosting productivity. In addition, equal attention should be given to working on successfully building teams within firms, as staff members often have to collaborate with other employees for a variety of projects and tasks. Entrepreneurs need to ensure that personnel can work together efficiently, as bad team experiences can turn workers off from joining with staff members for future assignments.

Many American employees have experienced poor teamwork
A recently released study by the University of Phoenix looked at the role of teamwork within companies, and the research found that while most workers understand the importance of collaborating with other employees, a significant number have had bad group experiences. For this reason, these employees would now prefer to complete duties and projects alone rather than work on teams.

Of the American workers surveyed, 95 percent stated that teamwork is a vital component of business operations. However, less than a quarter (24 percent) said they would like to collaborate with others in their organizations on upcoming tasks, with the remaining respondents saying they would prefer to work alone. These figures are due to the 68 percent of respondents who stated they have experienced being part of dysfunctional and inefficient teams, notes the research.

Among the poor behaviors these staff members saw during their time working on teams were verbal confrontations between members, workers placing blame on others and false rumors being started by certain co-workers.

Preventing poor teamwork habits
So how can small business owners prevent these types of dysfunctional team situations from occurring? Business 2 Community writes that leaders can develop techniques?aimed at effectively establishing and building supportive behaviors among staff members. These strategies need to focus on bolstering creativity, improving morale and giving employees the chance to get to know other team members.

One idea that could work for companies is to host fun, non-work related functions, both in their office environments and outside of traditional work settings. The source suggests holding trivia games, scavenger hunts, company cookouts and other related activities to foster teambuilding.

Weight Lifting Myths for Muscle and Fitness Debunked

When you take on the path for fitness and weight loss, there are thousands of questions in your mind. What should be the meal plans like? How can I tone up the abdominal or leg muscles? Which exercise is the best to shape up the body? The list goes on. With so many health and fitness related concerns, often the good-intentioned advice out there is completely far away from the truth, especially when it comes to weight training. To clear the air of the most common fitness whoppers in the field of weight training, here are 3 common myths that are debunked so that you do not fall for the misconceptions when starting your fitness.

Fitness Training Programs Need to Be Tailored to the Individual

Personal fitness training programs should always be tailored to the individual and not just be a generic program. Different people react differently to the same program and the results would not always be positive if you blindly follow something that was originally built for someone else.

REFILE-"Bottom of the barrel" Goldman bankers doomed Dragon sale-lawyer

* Lawyers make closing arguments in Goldman negligence trial

* Goldman bankers described as "D-team"

* Goldman lawyer says Dragon CEO ignored advice about

accounting issues

* Jury could begin deliberations on Thursday

BOSTON, Jan 17 (Reuters) - Four "bottom of the barrel"

investment bankers from Goldman Sachs doomed Dragon Systems'

sale to Lernout & Hauspie nearly 13 years ago, a lawyer for the

software company's founders said on Thursday in his closing

argument.

"Dragon was small potatoes. So (Dragon) got Goldman's

D-team," lawyer Alan Cotler said in a scathing rebuke of the

iconic Wall Street bank. "They got the bottom of the barrel."

The 20th day of the trial in U.S. District Court in Boston

also featured John Donovan, Goldman's top lawyer in the case,

who portrayed Dragon as a desperate company looking for a white

knight, even though top executives had misgivings about

Belgium-based Lernout & Hauspie's ethics and skyrocketing

revenue in Asia.

"Is it the role of the investment bank to detect fraud?"

Donovan said in his closing argument. "The answer is, 'No.' You

turn to accountants for accounting questions."

Dragon founders Jim and Janet Baker have accused Goldman of

being negligent after Lernout & Hauspie paid $580 million in

stock for Dragon and then went bankrupt in the wake of an

accounting scandal.

It wasn't the job of Goldman bankers to sniff out the

accounting fraud that ultimately doomed Lernout & Hauspie and

made the remaining stock held by the Bakers worthless, Donovan

argued.

CLOSING ARGUMENTS

The Bakers owned 51 percent of the company but only were

able to sell a few million dollars worth of L&H stock before the

company collapsed in an accounting fraud. The Bakers and two

other early Dragon employees are seeking several hundred million

dollars in damages. The jury could begin deliberations as early

as Thursday afternoon.

Donovan criticized Janet Baker, who was Dragon's chief

executive, for cutting Rich Wayner, Goldman's lead banker on the

assignment, out of the loop. She began negotiating with L&H

directly and hashed out an all-stock deal on a cocktail napkin.

Donovan said Janet Baker acted as her own investment banker and

blamed Goldman for her own decisions.

In addition, Donovan said Wayner implored Dragon to have an

outside accounting firm do a deep dive into Lernout & Hauspie's

financial statements. That advice fell on deaf ears, though,

Donovan said.

Cotler, however, portrayed Wayner, who left Goldman more

than a decade ago, as uncaring and unwilling to scrutinize

Lernout & Hauspie's revenue projections.

"Wayner didn't care. He was thinking about starting his own

company. He wasn't connecting the dots," Cotler said.

He also said Goldman's team misrepresented one of its

London-based analysts as an expert on Lernout & Hauspie. That

analyst later testified he wasn't following the company when he

got on a conference call with Dragon executives and made

positive comments.

In fact, he said he didn't know about a big spike in Lernout

& Hauspie's revenue in Asia. Had he known that, he said he would

have been skeptical.

"That's negligence and misrepresentation," Cotler told

jurors.

Cotler also said Wayner didn't tell Dragon executives he was

dissatisfied with the information he was getting from Lernout &

Hauspie.

"They didn't give financial advice," Cotler said. "They

acted like they were giving financial advice."

What Is "Defragging," and Do I Need to Do It to My Computer?

What Is "Defragging," and Do I Need to Do It to My Computer?Dear Lifehacker,
I hear people talk about "defragging" their computers all the time as a way to make it faster, but I'm not really sure what that means. What does defragging do and is it something I need to do to my computer? How often?

Sincerely,
Defragging Dude

Dear Defragging,
"Defrag" is short for "defragment," which is a maintenance task required by your hard drives.

What Is "Defragging," and Do I Need to Do It to My Computer? Most hard drives have spinning platters, with data stored in different places around that platter. When your computer writes data to your drive, it does so in "blocks" that are ordered sequentially from one side of the drive's platter to the other. Fragmentation happens when those files get split between blocks that are far away from each other. The hard drive then takes longer to read that file because the read head has to "visit" multiple spots on the platter. Defragmentation puts those blocks back in sequential order, so your drive head doesn't have to run around the entire platter to read a single file. Image by XZise.

When You Should (and Shouldn't) Defragment

Fragmentation doesn't cause your computer to slow down as much as it used to?at least not until it's very fragmented?but the simple answer is yes, you should still defragment your computer. However, what you need to do depends on a few factors. Here's what you need to know.

If You Use a Solid-State Drive: No Defragmentation Necessary

If you have a solid-state drive (SSD) in your computer, you do not need to defragment it. Solid-state drives, unlike regular hard drives, don't use a spinning platter to store data, and it doesn't take any extra time to read from different parts of the drive. So, defragmentation won't offer any performance increases (though SSDs do require their own maintenance).

Of course, if you have other non-solid-state drives in your computer, those will still need defragmentation.

If You Use Windows 7 or 8

What Is "Defragging," and Do I Need to Do It to My Computer?Windows 7 and Windows 8 automatically defragment your hard drives for you on a schedule, so you shouldn't have to worry about it yourself. To make sure everything's running smoothly, open up the Start menu or Start screen and type "defrag." Open up Windows' Disk Defragmenter and make sure it's running on a schedule as intended. It should tell you when it was last run and whether your drives have any fragmentation.

Note that in Windows 8, you'll see your SSDs in the Disk Defragmenter, but it doesn't actually defrag them; it's just performing other SSD-related maintenance. So don't worry if it's checked off along with the other drives.

If You Use Windows XP

What Is "Defragging," and Do I Need to Do It to My Computer? If you're on Windows XP, you'll need to defragment your drives yourself. Just open the Start menu, click Run, type Dfrg.msc and press Enter. You'll open up the Disk Defragmenter, from which you can defragment each of your drives individually. You should do this about once a week or so, but if you want, you can set it to run on a schedule using Windows' Task Scheduler.

If you're using an SSD, you should really upgrade to Windows 7, since XP doesn't have any built-in tools for SSD maintenance.

If You Use a Mac

If you use a Mac, then you probably don't need to manually defragment, since OS X will do it automatically for you (at least for small files). However, sometimes defragging?particularly if you have a lot of very large files?can help speed up a slow Mac.

When You Should Use a Third-Party Defragmenting Tool

What Is "Defragging," and Do I Need to Do It to My Computer? We've talked a bit before about the best defragmenting tools, since Windows' built-in Disk Defragmenter isn't the only one. However, for the vast majority of people, Windows' built-in tools are just fine. Third-party tools are useful if you want to see which files are fragmented or defragment system files (like if you're trying to shrink a drive), but are otherwise unnecessary for most users. So kick back, let your scheduled defragger do it's thing, and forget about it!

While you're at it, check out the other maintenance you need to do to your Windows PC and Mac.

Sincerely,
Lifehacker

Turkey to pursue Kurd rebels till they lay down arms: PM

ANKARA/DIYARBAKIR, Turkey (Reuters) - Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan said on Wednesday military operations against Kurdish rebels would continue until they laid down their arms, as Turkish media reported warplanes had bombed militants in northern Iraq for a third day.

The prospect of an end to three decades of war between the Turkish state and the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) has gained momentum in recent weeks after the government acknowledged it was talking to the insurgents' jailed leader.

Erdogan, under pressure to bring an end to the violence, has said his government's renewed peace efforts are sincere but has also maintained Ankara's hardline rhetoric over a conflict that has burned for 30 years.

"We want a solution with all our hearts, but to achieve this we will never compromise our dignity," Erdogan told members of his ruling AK Party at their headquarters in Ankara.

"Until the terror organization lays down its arms, until they end their attacks, our security forces will continue their operations," he said, describing the nascent peace talks as a "test of sincerity".

Turkish warplanes bombed PKK targets in northern Iraq overnight, according to media reports. Broadcaster CNN Turk said on Tuesday jets had also attacked PKK forces there on Sunday and Monday, in the first such raids since details of talks with PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan emerged.

Firat news agency, which has close links to the PKK, reported on Wednesday seven PKK fighters had been killed this week in air strikes.

There was no official Turkish confirmation of the raids.

Turkey is still reeling from one of the most violent summers since the PKK, which is designated a terrorist group by Ankara, the United states and the European Union, took up arms against the state in 1984. More than 40,000 people, mostly Kurds, have been killed since then.

Late last year Turkish intelligence officials began talks with Ocalan, imprisoned on an island south of Istanbul. Those talks have drawn fierce criticism from nationalist circles which accuse the government of going soft on the PKK.

The discussions were overshadowed last week by the execution-style killings of three Kurdish women activists in Paris, which Erdogan has suggested could be the result of an internal feud in the PKK or a bid to derail the peace moves.

ACTIVISTS' BODIES FLOWN HOME

The bodies of the activists, including that of PKK co-founder Sakine Cansiz, arrived by plane on Wednesday evening in Diyarbakir, the largest city in Turkey's mainly Kurdish southeast, ahead of a funeral ceremony on Thursday.

Amid tight security, thousands of Kurds gathered peacefully outside the airport, holding up pictures of Cansiz and chanting slogans in support of the PKK.

"Martyrs are immortal!", "Kurdistan will be a grave for fascism!" and "Long live leader Apo!" they shouted, referring to Ocalan, as vans carrying the coffins draped in green cloth drove slowly through the crowd.

Erdogan repeated his and other political leaders' call on Wednesday for calm at the funerals and said security forces would be "extremely sensitive and vigilant" against any provocation or sabotage.

Erdogan's government has widened cultural and language rights for Kurds, who make up about 20 percent of Turkey's population, since taking power 10 years ago. Kurdish politicians say the reforms do not go far enough.

While spelling out its demands from the insurgents, the government has given little hint of what concessions, if any, it might be willing to make. The PKK, like most Kurds in Turkey, still see "political autonomy" as one of their main demands in any solution to the Kurdish problem.

Underscoring the ongoing violence in Turkey's volatile southeast, PKK fighters attacked a police vehicle on Wednesday in the city of Mardin, southeast of Diyarbakir, killing one policeman, security sources said.

This Old Economy Stock's a Moneymaking Winner

Wednesday, January 16th, 2013
By Mitchell Clark, B.Comm. for Profit Confidential

Old Economy Stock?s a Moneymaking WinnerI?ve always liked railroad stocks; they are the backbone of North America, and they?re very good at making money. Often in this column we consider the stock market performance of Union Pacific Corporation (NYSE/UNP). I firmly believe that this company will continue to be a winner for investors.

As part of an ongoing series in this column, we?ve been looking at some of the best long-term performers the stock market has to offer. So far, we?ve considered PepsiCo, Inc. (NYSE/PEP), Union Pacific, and Colgate-Palmolive Company (NYSE/CL). While a track record can?t tell you where a stock is going to go in the future, for me, it lends a lot of weight to making a new investment decision. What I?m trying to find are great, dividend paying stocks that investors can accumulate when they?re down. If a stock has a history of recovering strongly from periods of price weakness, this lends a lot of credibility to its story.

Looking at railroad stocks specifically, one of the best-performing companies on the stock market has been Canadian National Railway Company (NYSE/CNI), which trades on both the New York and Toronto stock exchanges. Among railroad stocks, this company?s long-term wealth creation on the stock market is unmatched. The company?s dividend yield isn?t as large as other railroad stocks, but its capital gains are very impressive. The company?s stock chart is featured below:

Canadian National Railway Company Chart

Chart courtesy of www.StockCharts.com

This stock has basically been going straight up since the stock market correction in 2008/2009. On a split-adjusted basis, the stock was worth approximately $50.00 a share at the beginning of 2008, $20.00 a share in 2004, $10.00 a share in 2000, and $6.00 a share in 1996. Who said you can?t make money with old businesses like railroad stocks?

On the stock market, Canadian National Railway (CN) has a track record that can?t be beat by other railroad stocks. The company?s position is unique within the group, as it owns track all across Canada and straight down the middle of the U.S. to the Gulf Coast. The size of this infrastructure in two countries is unique and creates awesome economies of scale that have proven to benefit shareholders very well.

CN is the kind of company that I think blue chip stock market investors can consider when it?s down in price. Of course, this stock market winner isn?t down in price very often, because business is so good. Although economic forecasting is glorified guesswork, the Federal Reserve recently announced that it expects the U.S. economy to grow about 2.5% this year and 3.5% in 2014. If this economic recovery actually happens, which industry will be the first to benefit? It will be the railroad sector, and railroad stocks are some of the best large-cap companies that a stock market investor can consider.

Warren Buffett picked up on this trend a few years ago and bought out Burlington Northern Santa Fe entirely. (See ?A Top Stock with Increasing Dividends and Record Profits.?) This was a very good move, and I?m sure it?s highly profitable for his holding company. I think railroad stocks are going to do very well over the next few years, especially as agricultural commodities rise in value. I don?t have a sense as to where the stock market might go, but one thing I wouldn?t do is bet against railroad stocks. The old economy is back, and it?s going to make a lot more money for shareholders.

Some Things You Should Know About Homeschooling

Perhaps you already dismissed homeschooling. Maybe it is time to revisit it. It is becoming more and more popular and a lot of new tools are available to parents now too. The article below will help you see what is needed in order to homeschool your children.

Enjoy the time you spend homeschooling. When a topic that you are interested in comes up, delve deep into the topic and learn all you can about it. You have the library in your community at your disposal for materials you can use. Use this information to share with your kid via their homeschooling curriculum. This will help your child learn and you teach.

In learning anything, doing something over and over again is the key. This is why homeschoolers and traditional teachers alike have children write their vocabulary words and definitions out, and why note taking is beneficial. Use these methods, along with songs, rhymes and flashcards. Your kids can learn well if these techniques are used.

Learn how to recognize an impasse with your child. If you?ve been trying to teach a child in a certain way and it isn?t working, don?t push it further. Find an alternative method of teaching that subject to them. Find something adapted to your child?s learning style, such as experiments, field trips, problems, books or documentaries. Focus on the methods that correspond to your child?s learning style instead of always looking for ways to be original in your teaching.

Try writing down your reasons for homeschooling your kids. You know why you want to homeschool your children but until you put it in writing, it might not completely click for you or your spouse. This gives you a resource to reference when others ask what you?re doing. It can make things simpler for you.

Assign your kids household chores or get some help from outside the home. You might find it a struggle to teach your children all day while also taking care of the house. Your everyday household and motherly duties, homeschooling, and everything else you need to do will be overwhelming unless you call in help. You needn?t feel guilty about accepting help, and you should accept it every chance you get.

Direct your child to maintain a daily journal. This is a great way to document their progress as well as their lives. You can read your children?s perspective on life when you review the journal. Allow them to decorate their journal with descriptive artwork. Not only does a journal encourage learning and writing, it will become a wonderful keepsake later in life.

The location of your classroom is important for homeschooling. It must foster a comfortable environment for learning without any distractions. You need to have enough space for a lot of action and activity. It should also be in an easily visible area.

Try to form a social group with homeschooling families in your area. If you have a little group meeting regularly, your child will get the social interaction they need. This also gets you outside of the house regularly.

Foster your child?s independence. The less supervision you provide, the easier your job will be. Explain what you expect of them, then allow them to work alone. This teaches independence and confidence, and they will learn that messing around or not taking lessons seriously means less free time.

Your kids will love being homeschooled if you approach it correctly. This provides numerous benefits to you and your children. It?s natural to feel somewhat uncertain when making important decisions that affect your family, but it certainly helps to learn as much as possible about your options. Don?t put it off any longer, get into this great educational option today.

Agricultural demand for pollination is growing more quickly than the supply of honey bees, the dominant species managed for crop pollination. Increasing the efficiency of pollination represents a way of increasing crop yield without any increase in agricultural intensity or area. A study recently published in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences (9 Jan 2013) 1, shows that the pollination effectiveness of honey bees in California almond orchards was greater in the presence of other bees.

Almond is a crop highly dependent on honey bee pollination and is a $3 billion industry in California. The study by researchers in Germany at Leuphana University of Lneburg and California at UC Berkeley and Davis found that where other species of bees were present, honey bee behaviour changed and their pollination effectiveness was greater than in orchards where other bees were absent. Furthermore, orchards with wild bees had a greater proportion fruit set. These findings show that wild pollinators not only contribute directly to almond pollination, but also indirectly through increasing the pollination service provided by the honey bees.

A second study in the same system published in Global Change Biology (27 Nov 2012)2 found two other mechanisms by which pollinator diversity improved pollination service to almond. Firstly, they found that honey bees preferred to visit flowers in the top parts of the almond trees. Where wild pollinators were present, they often visited the lower parts of the trees, filling the gap in pollination service left by the honey bees. Secondly, in high winds, orchards with only honey bees present had almost no pollination service as the honey bees were not flying. In orchards with a diversity of pollinators, pollination service was buffered to an extent by the wild bees.

During high winds, the wild bees were still observed visiting almond flowers. Wild pollinators can therefore help sustain pollination service under extreme weather conditions, when the service by honey bees declines. This is particularly important in almond as it flowers early in the year when the weather conditions can be unfavourable for bee flight. The findings presented in the two articles highlight different ways biodiversity is important for pollination service.

The researchers presenting the studies are Alexandra-Maria Klein and Claire Brittain from Leuphana University of Lneburg, Claire Kremen from UC Berkeley and Neal Williams from UC Davis.

The Benefits of Raw Honey | Natural Holistic Health Blog

Benefits of Raw Honey

Raw honey doesn?t only taste amazing, it has some terrific health benefits!

The bees have lent us some of their immunity in the product of their hives. If you have never eaten raw honey, you are in for a taste and health treat.

Facts about Raw Honey

Honey has been around as long as there have been bees. We see cartoons about bears getting stung mercilessly while trying to grab some of this sweet confection from the hives. If they risked pain, there must be something good about it.

Here?s a little about the process.

Bees gather nectar from plants and return it to the hive. Through the enzymes secreted in their saliva and the nectar, the bees create honey and store it in their hives. Bee keepers keep bees and remove the honeycombs once the honey making process is completed by the bees.

Raw honey?differs from processed honey in that it is taken from the bees and then jarred in its natural state. Different types of flower nectar can produce different colored honeys with different tastes.

The honey is not heated as processed honeys are. Therefore it retains its enzymes, pollen, royal jelly, vitamins and minerals. You may even get a jar that still has the honeycomb in it.

There is talk about unpasteurized honey containing impurities. If there are any, they are of such low amount that the benefits of eating the raw honey would outweigh any negatives. And, it wouldn?t be enough to be harmful to human beings.

Health Benefits of Raw Honey

There are a myriad of health benefits of honey. Raw honey is a natural sweetener. If you want to cut back on the white sugar or even the brown, try using honey to sweeten your coffee, desserts, and your glazes for your meats.

Honey is an antiseptic. It can be used to help fight infection in wounds and burns. There is also an antibacterial effect that assists here as well. Because of the heating process, this same effect is not necessarily true of processed honey products.

Another health benefit of raw honey is that it is an antioxidant. This means that eating it can help you fight the free radical damage that leads to arthritis, heart disease, wrinkling and other signs of aging within and on the outside of the body.

Raw honey?contains many vitamins including: niacin, riboflavin, B complex vitamins, biotin, and vitamins A, C, D, E, and K. Minerals present are: potassium, zinc, copper, calcium and phosphorus. The body needs all of these.

You may have heard that honey can soothe a sore throat. It can also help stop coughs, prevent colds and act as a laxative to help with motility in the intestinal tract. Add honey to your tea to help you sleep when you are restless.

Use this sweet health booster as a first line of defense for common ailments.

The Healing Honey Of The Tea Tree

100% Pure Manuka Raw Honey is pure, natural, unpasteurized, organically produced honey. It is collected by the honeybees from the flowers of the wild, uncultivated Tea Tree Bush ( leptospermum scoparium ) in New Zealand. Manuka Raw Honey has been cold slung ( extracted from the comb without heating ). It is creamy in texture and it is very rich in methylgloaxal, a naturally occurring antibacterial ingredient with unique health giving properties.

Manuka Raw Honey is a true miracle food and an instant energy building food containing all the essential minerals necessary for life: seven vitamins of the B complex group, amino acids, enzymes and antibacterial agents. Besides being healthy and nutritious, we are certain that this elixir of life is the most delicious honeys you have ever tasted. Learn more about Manuka Raw Honey now!

Razer Edge Brings PC Gaming To Windows 8 Tablets

By John Gaudiosi on Thu, Jan 10 2013

One of the big themes at CES 2013 was the rise of portable gaming devices. Razer, which started out making high-end PC gaming peripherals, has officially named it?s Project Fiona gaming tablet. Razer Edge will be available in Q1 in two models starting at $999. Both the Razer Edge and Razer Edge Pro will come equipped with an NVIDIA GT640M LE GPU and run on Windows 8.

?When we decided to design a tablet from the ground up, we did it to create a phenomenal experience for mobile gamers,? said Min-Liang Tan, Razer co-founder, CEO and creative director. ?By combining the best of PC and console gaming with Windows 8, we?ve created a true gaming tablet. Clearly, the critical acclaim and community support the Razer Edge has enjoyed suggests we hit the mark. Now, we get to celebrate the reality of what was formerly a dream with the audience for which this groundbreaking tablet was made.?

The world?s first gaming tablet for PC gamers was also designed by PC gamers, as a massive crowdsourcing effort put into place by Razer targeted millions of gamers to determine final specifications for the Edge. Razer let its community (and the PC gaming community as a whole) decide the end-game chipset, weight/thickness, features and even price for the Edge, and hosted the initiative on its social media pages.

PC gamers ended up helping to design the most powerful tablet in the world today, the only system of its kind utilizing technology from both Intel and NVIDIA. Powerful 3rd generation Intel? Core? processors will help ensure even the most advanced, full-fledged PC games will function at full capacity, and NVIDIA GeForce graphics will offer striking visual clarity?a first for tablet gaming and a godsend for the world?s 300 million-plus PC gamers.

By way of a true Windows 8 operating system, the broadest array of today?s most popular PC games will run natively on the Razer Edge without the need to be ported, optimized or developed anew.

That functionality out-of-the-box is prevalent in any of the Razer Edge?s modes, as the tablet offers a myriad of form factors. It?s a tablet, it?s a PC, and it?s a console.

The system will be available in two types: a standard Razer Edge and the Razer Edge Pro model. The base model is equipped with an Intel Core i5 processor, NVIDIA GT640M LE GPU, 4 GB of DDR3 RAM, and a 64 GB SSD. The Razer Edge Pro comes replete with an upgraded Intel Core i7 processor, NVIDIA GT640M LE GPU, 8 GB of DDR3 RAM, and a 128 GB or 256 GB SSD.

The Razer Edge Pro will additionally be offered in a bundle package with a Gamepad Controller in both the 128 GB and 256GB SSD model. Each model is available at a wide-range of retail outlets and online at www.razerzone.com, and includes a USB 3.0 port and supports Bluetooth 4.0.

Four dedicated configurations offer maximum versatility for Razer Edge users: Tablet mode, Keyboard Dock mode, Gamepad Controller mode and Docking Station mode. Tablet mode avails the Razer Edge with multi-touch capabilities for full Windows 8 applications, movies and music playback, in a traditional tablet form factor. An optional Keyboard Dock gives the Razer Edge the laptop experience with a traditional keyboard and mouse, supporting a removable 40 Wh battery, so gamers can play their favorite keyboard and mouse reliant PC titles (Q3 2013).

An optional Gamepad Controller turns the Razer Edge into a mobile console, offering an immersive, portable gaming experience. A fully programmable dual controller interface with precise analog sticks is unique among all tablets, featuring the ability to play any PC game ?out of the box,? along with immersive vibration-feedback, so players can ?feel? every in-game explosion and recoil ($250). An extended battery ($70) is able to connect with both the Keyboard Dock and Gamepad Controller, and doubles battery life for the Razer Edge.

Finally, the Razer Edge can be docked in the Docking Station ($100) as part of home console mode, which serves as a full desktop and charging resource with three USB 2.0 ports, an HDMI 1.4 port, mic-in and stereo-out. Hook-up the Razer Edge to the big screen with multiple gamepad controllers and Razer gear and tag team PC games with your friends for a complete home console experience.

The Razer Edge tablet in its many forms is designed with ultra-precise accelerometers and a highly-sensitive, multi-touch screen. This provides game developers with fertile new ground for engineering game experiences around the hybrid control capabilities. It also ensures current-generation PC games and those optimized for touchscreens run on the tablet. Future games developed for the Razer Edge are expected to take advantage of the integrated gamepad and functionality controls for the touchscreen and accelerometer-based movements.
