Historic ships dear to vets but costly for museums

MOUNT PLEASANT, South Carolina - The Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum, a popular tourist spot in South Carolina's Charleston Harbor, is facing the same challenge as other U.S. Navy ship museums: keeping retired, once-storied warships afloat.

Its World War Two destroyer, the USS Laffey, just had a nearly $13 million restoration. The almost 70-year-old World War Two aircraft carrier, the USS Yorktown, will need eventual repairs at a cost of tens of millions of dollars.

The USS Clamagore, a 1945 submarine at a dock nearby, could roll over in the next hurricane without extensive work to shore up its hull. While a veterans' group tries to raise enough money to save the sub, museum officials are making plans to have it towed to sea and turned into an artificial reef.

"Every ship cannot be kept as a floating museum," said Robert "Mac" Burdette, executive director at Patriots Point, which as the country's oldest aircraft carrier museum draws 230,000 visitors a year. "I wish they could. The money's not there in the world anymore."

The nation's 48 Navy ship museums are trying to balance preserving history and sentiment with the expense of maintaining huge, aging warships, a delicate act complicated by the fact that most do not get funding from the U.S. Navy or other government entities.

The ships need maintenance that was once done daily by hundreds of sailors, and a few need significant restoration to stay afloat. With the country strapped by budget woes, those ships may have to be sunk if money cannot be found.

At Independence Seaport Museum in Philadelphia, the 1892 USS Olympia, a relic of the Spanish-American War and the world's oldest steel-hulled ship still floating, needs up to $20 million worth of work, said museum marketing director Hope Corse.

The museum does not have the money and cannot raise it, so it is looking to transfer the Olympia to one of two interested groups out of state, she said.

That solution is not ideal. The ship has not been hauled out of the water since 1945, and towing it would be expensive and risky, said Jesse Lebovics, museum historic ships manager.

Other museums have funded costly repairs through loans from state governments or a combination of ticket sales, donations, grants and events. The Navy does not help finance the ships it began donating to museums in 1948, museum officials said.

"They have to fund the fighting ships, the ones that are still there," Burdette said.

In June, the USS Texas, a 100-year-old World War One battleship near Houston, sprang a leak. "And it led to many more leaks," said Andy Smith, ship manager for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, which operates the ship museum. "We took on a lot of water."

Repair and environmental cleanup cost $2 million, Smith said. With funds that include a $25 million state bond, the ship will now get major repairs, he said.

South Carolina's Patriots Point is a state agency but receives no taxpayer dollars toward its $9.5 million annual budget, Burdette said. The museum was able to restore the Laffey over the course of three years with help from a $9.2 million loan from the state.

"It's beautiful," said 92-year-old Wilbert Gauding of Ravenna, Ohio, during a recent visit to the ship.

An original crew member, Gauding said he was a machinist's mate second class aboard the Laffey on D-Day, June 6, 1944. "We escorted the boats across the (English) Channel," he said. "We did a lot of shelling of the pillboxes on the beach over there."

"If you don't bring this home to the next generation, they'll forget what his generation did for us - the sacrifice they made for our freedom," said Gauding's daughter, Pat Goodhart, 63.

On the nearby Yorktown, rust streaks the hull and bulkheads. Belowdecks where the public is not allowed, painted green Xs mark corroded deck metal that might not bear a person's weight. Most of the flight deck and a number of steel hull plates on the 888-foot (270-metre) carrier will eventually need to be replaced.

To those who might suggest sinking the old warships rather than paying for the repairs, Burdette answers that doing so with the Yorktown could cost as much as $60 million. "We have married her for better or worse for a lifetime," he said.

Having opted to focus on raising money for its centerpiece exhibit, Patriots Point hopes to find a buyer who would pay to sink the Cold War-era Clamagore within the next few years in order to create an artificial reef and relieve the museum of that cost burden.

The decision upset hundreds of Clamagore veterans, who have responded by raising about $30,000 toward the $3 million needed to save the submarine.

They are not optimistic about the likely success of their efforts.

"I don't think we're going to be able to come up with the bucks," said veteran George Bass, 86, of Salisbury, North Carolina, who served for nine years on the Clamagore. "It means everything to us. It would be just like losing a member of your family."

A year of questions finds few answers in Baby Lisa case ...

By CHRISTINE VENDEL and GLENN E. RICE

The Kansas City Star

The Kansas City Star

Deborah Bradley hasn?t seen her daughter, the tot she calls Baby Lisa, for nearly a year.

Still, she occasionally buys toddler clothes in increasingly larger sizes, keeps the baby?s room intact and tells neighbors and friends she fully expects the little girl to come home.Experts say it could happen. About 57 percent of children abducted by strangers each year are returned home alive. Infants usually have an even higher recovery rate, experts say. But most of those children are found quickly. National statistics from 2011 show 90 percent of children are recovered within 72 hours of an Amber Alert.Thursday will mark the one-year anniversary of the disappearance of 10-month-old Lisa Irwin from her home in the 3600 block of North Lister Avenue. Her father, Jeremy Irwin, returned home from a late shift Oct. 4 and found his front door open, several lights on, and Bradley asleep. Lisa?s crib was empty. Her parents have maintained that someone broke into their home and snatched Lisa while the toddler slept. Since then, investigators have worked 1,667 tips, including 500 baby sightings around the world. Police checked about 100 leads twice ? just to be sure ? and they shared their case file with national experts for advice.Yet, nearly 12 months later, police and federal agents seem no closer to finding Lisa or establishing how she disappeared. They say they are facing the same giant hurdle: They haven?t been able to sit down one-on-one with Bradley ? the only adult in the home at the time Lisa vanished ? since the first days of the investigation. She admitted she had been drinking that night, but has repeatedly said she had nothing to do with the disappearance.?Police continue to have questions to which only she can provide answers,? police wrote in a press release issued Friday. The cooperation of parents is vital to an investigation, said Robert Lowery, a senior executive with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.?I would just urge the parents to reconsider,? he said. ?The final concern is finding the child and returning her home.?Leads provided so far by Lisa?s family and their attorneys haven?t helped, police said. The parents? lawyer took exception to the tone of the police statement, insisting ?our doors are open, the phone is open, they have our numbers and they can call.?In an email statement, the couple asked for tips and thanked people for support.?Every day we wake up hoping it will be the day she comes home to us,? their statement said. ?Until that day happens, our family will continue to be incomplete without her.? The initial force of more than 100 investigators has now dwindled to one detective and one federal agent who work tips along with other cases. Police know one tip could crack things open. The passage of time, they say, can both help and hurt a case. Memories and physical evidence may degrade, but relationships and alliances among people withholding key information can also shift.A $100,000 reward remains available to anyone with information that brings Lisa home.Even if the situation appears bleak, Lowery said, people should keep an open mind. ?Someone out there knows what happened,? he said. ?That child did not get out of that crib and walk away.?
Sgt. Sondra Zink, who was the lead investigator on the Baby Lisa case for nearly six months, remembers the wakeup call about 4:30 a.m. last Oct. 4 that started it all.The first she heard was that a baby was missing in a possible custody dispute involving grandparents. The baby wasn?t believed to be in danger.?Keep me updated,? she told the officer on the phone before she hopped in the shower to head into work early. Before she could even dry off, she learned the grandparents didn?t have the baby.Zink?s heart sank. This case was no longer routine. It was an Amber Alert. ?The full scope of what it turned into didn?t hit me until two days into the investigation,? she said.
The weather on a recent afternoon was picture perfect on North Lister. The crisp air was punctuated with the sound of children playing, young boys riding their bicycles up and down the street and a man mowing his yard.Life here seems little different from other neighborhoods throughout the Northland.Still, the reminders of a tragedy linger.Fliers soliciting information about the missing child plaster street light poles. Large posters and signs are taped to the windows and to the front door of Irwins? one-story, beige ranch home.
One of the first things Zink did at the scene was call the FBI. Together, they assembled a task force of core investigators by 6 a.m.By lunch, they had set up a command post in a field not far from the Irwin home complete with a bus for the task force to use as an office, portable restrooms, a Salvation Army tent, mounted patrol officers, police dogs and all-terrain vehicles. Inside the bus, Zink coordinated officers who were arriving by the dozen from area law enforcement agencies. Investigators were told to exhaust every lead, ?whether it takes 10 minutes or 10 hours.?Two civilians started a database to track leads. They also checked license plates associated with baby sightings and reports of sex offenders who lived in the area.It was like a scene out of a movie, Zink said ? assignments barked out and officers springing into action. Did a police dog search here? Did someone talk to this neighbor??It was overwhelming but reassuring at the same time,? Zink said.As hours ticked by with no sign of Lisa, Zink recalled statistics that show that in fatal child abductions, the child is usually killed within three hours. If Lisa was not found alive, her case would be handed over to homicide detectives. Zink asked for a homicide detective to be put on the task force, just in case. She knew it would be detrimental to try to hand over a complicated case that didn?t have a homicide detective involved from the start.
This week, Bradley pulled the family?s sport utility vehicle into the driveway. A screen decal of a poster featuring her missing daughter dominates the vehicle?s back window.Bradley stepped out of the vehicle along with Lisa?s half brothers and the family dog. They retreated inside the home but quickly returned outside to sit on the front porch.Moments later, the dog broke free from its handler and raced down the street. Children who had been gathered in a nearby yard quickly chased down the pet as Bradley walked up to them. She thanked the children for their help and instructed her older son how to keep a tight grip on the leash to ensure the dog doesn?t run away again.
The case hit international status within 72 hours. Zink said that added layers of frustration and complexity. The nonstop attention by local and national media provided no escape for investigators.Although the coverage put Lisa?s picture in front of millions, it also proved to be a ?huge hindrance? that muddied the waters, Zink said.?We wasted a lot of time on tips,? she said, ?that turned out to stem from something somebody heard on the news.?
Neighbors and those close to the family paint Bradley as prayerful and confident that Lisa will one day come home. They say Lisa?s parents believe whoever took the girl either sold her or is raising her as their own.?When I used to see her for the first few times, Debbie would cry every time she talked about Lisa,? said Dee Garrett, who lives across the street from Baby Lisa?s parents. ?But now, she seems to be better. She seems to be excited when she says they are going to get Lisa back soon.?
Emotions remained high at the command post for weeks, Zink said.?I can?t describe the intensity,? she said. ?We all knew, ?We gotta keep going.???Two detectives spent a week doing nothing but watching surveillance videos from city buses, red light cameras, businesses near the Irwin home and local big-box stores?Do you know how many babies go through the checkout at Walmart in an hour?? Zink said. The case was Zink?s last thought each night and first thought each morning.Even in the first few days, Zink said there was a time where she believed they were ?mere moments? away from recovering Lisa.?Then, no. She?s not here,? Zink recalled with tears in her eyes.
A small group of neighbors have banded around Bradley. They hold a brief prayer vigil inside the Irwin home each month and counsel Bradley when worry overcomes her. ?It?s hard. She is grieving for her baby. She wants her back,? a neighbor said. ?What keeps her going is the hope that her baby will be back at anytime.? Meanwhile, neighbors have become more vigilant and cautious of strange vehicles that cruise through the neighborhood. They keep a watchful eye on their children, who know that a baby from their block went missing without a trace on a cool October night.
Bradley initially gave police an extended interview, but when she felt investigators continued to be accusatory, she told police she no longer wanted to talk to them. Her attorneys criticized police on national television, alleging that detectives were abusive and focused too much on Bradley?s actions and behaviors. The accusations stung investigators.?We wanted to say, ?No! That?s not right,??? Zink said. ???That?s not how it went down.? But we knew it wasn?t in the best interest of the investigation or child.?Allegations that police had tunnel-vision on Bradley also weren?t true, Zink said. She said investigators regularly brainstormed during their investigation, pretending the mother had a rock-solid alibi.?If mom had an alibi, where would we go? What would we look at?? she said.
Bradley?s level of cooperation remains in dispute. Her attorney, John Picerno, maintains that Bradley has been accessible to police and answered their questions. ?The last time we sat down, I didn?t say a word and they got to videotape it,? he said Friday. ?They got to ask everything they wanted, so we are a little suspicious, as we have been all along, about why they want to isolate her.?Bradley and Irwin have appeared on a variety of national television news and daytime talk shows. Yet they?ve declined interview requests from local reporters.Picerno said Bradley and Irwin feel those interviews would be counterproductive.
A core group of investigators remained totally focused on Lisa?s case until about mid-March, when they started taking on other cases.About that same time, Zink took a transfer to the department?s robbery unit. She didn?t want to leave Lisa?s case unresolved, but the daily deluge of child abuse, neglect and porn she encountered from work in the juvenile section had taken its toll over five years. ?For my own sanity, I had to step away,? she said, admitting that she felt guilty. ?I felt like I was abandoning the ones (on the Baby Lisa case) who were still left dealing with it.?Zink is proud of the way police and federal agents worked seamlessly together. But she has one regret.?The bottom line is, no matter how good the investigation is, there?s still a baby missing and we don?t know how,? she said. ?There?s no way to walk away and feel good about that.? Zink said she hoped police will be able to find Lisa alive and well even if the odds don?t favor a cheery conclusion. ?But the happy ending where we found out what happened to her and the person is punished?? she said. ?I won?t give up on that.?

look 'closely' at the edges on the maple in that stack and you can see that I have an alignment issue on my TS.

I'm trying to figure out Where the problem is though...

when I start a cut, it goes fairly smooth until about 20" into the cut, at which point i need to Both slow down and increase the pressure I'm pushing with... to the point of popping a breaker if I push too hard/fast. taking it slowly, I can get through, but with burnt edges. I've switched blades, both of mine are either 'in dire need of sharpening....' or something is out of whack.

I've checked and as near as I can tell the blade is parallel with the fence, and with the miter slots.

now this is the 'best' evidence I've got that the blade and fence are parallel.. I don't have a gauge, so I've used a square, marking a tooth and measuring distance fore and aft to the miter slot and the fence.

HOwever in mid cut, I'm getting a gap:

and yes, the board itself is straight as near as I can tell.

what am I missing in the equation?

Video: Presentation of ?Unprecedented? at Western Michigan University Medical Humanities Conference

On Friday I gave a talk about the challenge to the Affordable Care Act at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan (home of Derek Jeter!) at the Medical Humanities Conference. Most of the people in attendance were not lawyers?mostly medical students, medical ethicists, philosophers, and other students of the humanities. My talk was simplified a bit to explain a number of terms, and I didn?t go into nearly enough depth about the differences between penalties and taxes and the like, though I think it went over well.

The conference was running a bit late, so I had to bide some time at the beginning (you can hear me bantering with the crowd about my Op-Eds I drafted before the case that were utterly useless once the opinion came down, and about broccoli).

Fast-forward to 9:50 to hear me start.

Is a commercial space port a good allocation of Florida real estate ...

In the Orlando area, to what uses are parcels of commercial real estate put?

Office buildings, of course, and shops, restaurants and the like.

But the state of Florida has an interesting and somewhat unusual plan for a 150-acre parcel of real estate north of Cape Canaveral. It recently asked NASA to transfer the land to the state so it could explore the option of developing a commercial space port.

Over the past few years, commercial space activity has gone from an idea dreamed about by science-fiction authors to a concept with real potential. Billionaire Richard Branson, for example, has made commercial space travel a priority of his and a great many companies use satellites as a core part of their business.

It seems like the state of Florida is quite serious about the possibility of a commercial space port. Its space-development art, Space Florida, has committed $2.3 million to perform environmental studies on the land, pay for appraisals, conduct title searches and otherwise lay the foundation for the port. Those are the basic legal activities that any business or private individual must do when acquiring a parcel of real estate.

Commercial space ports currently exist in Virginia, Alaska and California as well as in Mexico (where Branson has said he plans to launch a "fleet of suborbital passenger spaceships.")

Although Florida has a long affiliation with space, some people think the money it's spending on the possible space port could be better spent elsewhere, like small business incubators or providing free or low-cost training classes to entrepreneurs. What do you think? Does exploring the possibility of a potential space port seem like a judicious use of funds?

Because I am a teacher | Cruel Shoes

When I was in college, I had a professor tell me that I was made to be a science teacher. At the time, I was an English major and science was the furthest thing from my mind. The more I thought about it, though, the more I realized that she was right. It was my Biology class that I was excited to go to each week and my English classes I dreaded.

Still, she had said ?teacher?, and I wasn?t so sure about that. I had teachers through my K-12 education who had made me want to be a teacher and I had teachers during that same time that made me want to have nothing to do with education. I was skeptical.

During my sophomore year, I got a paid gig doing supplemental instruction for Biology students. This wasn?t tutoring, per se, it involved planning on my part. I had to attend various Bio lectures, then create a supplemental lesson plan designed to revisit the content from lecture in more visual or hands-on ways. My students were usually either athletes who were being forced to attend by their coaches or non-traditional students who really didn?t want to have to pay for the class more than once.

I found that I loved those classes. I loved sitting in the lectures, I loved planning, I loved getting to know my students, and I loved differentiating for them (before I had ever heard that word in reference to education).

I changed my major to Science Education, then Biology itself, and happily continued pursuit of a degree. During my senior year, I found myself restless and anxious to finish, anxious to have my own students. At the time, Yahoo had a feature that allowed users to create chat rooms and I began to create one called ?Biology tutoring?. I would get students from all over the word and of all ages. A few continued to chat with me throughout their Biology experience (and two of them still contact me from time to time, all grown up). I found these little snippets of ?teaching? to be something like sustenance.

Fast forward through my high school science teacher career to where I am today, an instructional technology specialist. This means I don?t have a classroom ? or students. I take on teaching gigs for online classes, which helps to sate my appetite for teaching young people. However, I have discovered one way that also satisfies that need without any effort on my part ? a YouTube video.

Yes, a YouTube video. Not just any video, but one that I uploaded three years ago. This thing is embarrassingly simple and goofy-looking. I created it quickly to help some of my online Chemistry students learn an alternative to dimensional analysis. I posted it to YouTube for them. I never thought that three years later, I would be approaching 20,000 views.

The part about the video that satisfies me are the comments. They ebb and flow. Sometimes I will get a new comment each week. Other times, I might have to wait a month, but those comments always give me that warm fuzzy feeling all over again. Sometimes they just tell me thanks, sometimes they ask me questions (which I try to always respond to), and sometimes they share the video with their friends or teachers.

I have the heart of a teacher. I might not be in a classroom. There might not be any students who even know my name, but I have made a difference to, surprisingly, mostly college students who are struggling through Chemistry and find my video.

When we are struggling with whatever stresses are coming our way ? and as educators, this is an ongoing flow ? we must always remember that we are making a difference ? because we are teachers.

NFL Week 4 hot topics: Michael Vick's job security, Saints struggles and more

What?s hot heading into Week 4, with the regular referees back, and only three teams remaining unbeaten?

Michael Vick could lose his job to turnovers, putting Andy Reid in more danger of losing his job

I can?t wait to see Sunday night?s game in person in Philadelphia, mainly to see how Vick handles the Giants? ferocious pass rush.

The Eagles (2-1) can?t keep winning if Vick keeps turning the ball over so frequently. He has nine turnovers in three games. Vick has more turnovers than any other team (let only player) except the Chiefs, who also have nine.

There?s no way Reid is eager to bench Vick in favor of Nick Foles, a rookie who looked good during preseason, but has never started a regular-season game.

However, Sunday night begins a critical three-game stretch for the Eagles against playoff teams from 2011. They visit the Steelers in Week 5, then return home to face the Lions in Week 6.

Facing the Giants could be another nightmare for Vick. They have pass rushers that force quarterbacks into mistakes. Not all of the turnovers have been Vick?s fault as the Eagles? offensive line has serious protection issues. Vick, however, has been guilty of holding the ball too long, and not recognizing blitzes quickly enough.

Sunday night will be another referendum on Vick, the Eagles? offensive line, and the Eagles? legitimacy as a Super Bowl contender. Reid is the NFL?s longest-tenured coach, but he has not won a Super Bowl. Giants coach Tom Coughlin has won two.

Win or lose Sunday night, the Giants know they are capable of taking their game to another level at any time. Look at how they dismantled the Panthers, 36-7, in Week 3. Look at how Eli Manning has played in fourth quarters throughout his career, and during January runs to the Super Bowl.

Vick does not have that kind of track record, and Reid no longer has the job security Coughlin enjoys, following the Eagles? not-so-great 8-8 record in 2011. Reid can?t let this season get away from him. What if Vick falters the next three weeks, and the Eagles are 2-4 heading into their Week 7 bye? That could mean bye-bye for Vick as a starter. Which could eventually mean bye-bye for Reid.

Tom Brady doesn?t do three-game losing streaks. Or does he?

The Patriots? future Hall of Fame quarterback has not lost three straight games since 2002. Having dropped their last two, the Patriots (1-2) visit the Bills on Sunday, in what will be a great atmosphere.

The Bills (2-1) are hungry to be respected as a playoff contender. Beating the Patriots, who need a win badly, would be a statement.

Defensive end Mario Williams got the big bucks from the Bills during the offseason for games like this. If the Bills? talented front four of Williams, Mark Anderson, Marcell Dareus, and Kyle Williams can stay in Brady?s face, it could set the tone.

Asked about the criticism he received after the Jets blew out the Bills in Week 1, Williams brought up his past, when the Texans were criticized for picking him No. 1 in the draft over Reggie Bush in 2006.

``I guess these analysts forget,?? Williams said during a conference call this week. ``Everything pretty much worked out there (Houston) for six years, being a part of that team and changing things around. I have heard criticism my whole career, whether it is about me or the team I am playing with. And the end of the day, I prevailed. So that is what I am looking to do here.??

For Williams, handing Brady a third straight loss would be a sign that things are changing for the better in Buffalo.

Are they Lions or cubs?

The Lions were a feel-good story last season, making the playoffs for the first time since 1999. But they are 1-2 heading into Sunday?s game against the Vikings. Late-game mistake and porous defense have hurt the Lions in the young season. They are giving up 31.3 points per game. It will be tough for them to win consistently unless that number goes down.

The Lions have a bye in Week 5, and being 2-2 would feel so much better than 1-3. But the Vikings are no longer pushovers, with quarterback Christian Ponder looking like one of the NFL?s most improved players. If the Lions drop to 1-3, in the tough NFC North, they could be the latest example of how fleeting NFL success can be.

Which hangover is worse, the Bounty Scandal, or the Replacement Rip Off?

Both the Saints and Packers need love heading into Sunday?s matchup at Lambeau Field. The Saints are looking at a possible 0-4 start. The Packers (1-2) need to move on, after feeling ripped off by the replacement referees in Seattle.

No wonder the NFL has so many people hooked. A month ago, you would have been hard pressed to find anyone that said, ``Starting Week 4, the Cardinals will be 3-0, and the Saints and Packers will have one victory between them.??

Enjoy your Sunday.

Enjoying Your Deck, Patio and Porch Through ... - Home Improvement

Now that fall is officially upon us, days are gradually getting shorter and evenings chillier. That doesn?t mean that you should stop enjoying time outside on your deck. On the contrary, this is the perfect time to take advantage of any nice weather, revel in the fall colors and breathe in as much fresh air as possible before winter sets in and confines us indoors.

? Start out by giving your deck, patio or porch a good sweeping and washing to clean off the dust, dirt and cobwebs that may have accumulated over the spring and summer. The furniture could probably be wiped down too, while you?re at it. If your deck is worn out and not worth getting it all set up for fall, this is a great time of year to have your deck builder come out and give you a fresh start.

? If you depend on your trees and plants to give you privacy around your deck, you may need to create privacy in other ways once their leaves start to drop. You can set up an outdoor privacy screen or reconfigure the furniture in your lounging area to form a more intimate and private setting.

? It?s easy to cozy things up with cushions and throws. Use weather-resistant fabrics unless you plan on bringing cushions and blankets in every night or unless you have a weatherproof storage box that you place them in to keep them dry.

? Even a hammock is enjoyable at this time of year if you bring out a blanket. Look up and enjoy the color of the leaves on the trees.

? Place outdoor space heaters around the seating areas. If you have a fire pit or outdoor fireplace, now is the time to clean out the accumulated ashes from the summer and make sure the wood box is full.

? Change out your decor for more seasonal items. Lanterns, gourds and earth-tones are good for setting a cozy fall mood. Since your garden may no longer be the showstopper that was is in the summer, you may need to create a focal point to replace what is no longer in season. Potted mums are a lovely way to add color to a deck or patio at this time of year.

? Since days are getting shorter and quality of light is changing, consider making changes to your outdoor lighting. Choose your lighting according to how you use each area of the deck or yard and how much light is required for that area. Add candles, lanterns, outdoor lamps and landscape lighting for ambiance. You can also place light pucks or strands of light under handrails, deck railing or stairs. A spotlight above the grilling area is helpful so you?re sure your dinner is cooked to perfection.

If you don?t yet have a great patio, porch or deck that calls you outside to enjoy the season, it may just be time to get working on your next home improvement or call in a professional deck builder to get it done so that you can sit back and enjoy the fall colors and refreshing evenings.

Is Your Ductwork Leaking Air? - Cabrillo Plumbing Heating and ...

Your HVAC system works hard to heat and cool your home, so you want to make sure that the air it conditions is distributed properly throughout your house. Unfortunately, cracks and disconnections in ductwork can create serious comfort and efficiency problems in your home. In fact, the EPA says that the typical home loses 20 percent of the air that travels through its ductwork. If you have leaky ducts in your home, duct sealing is the perfect solution.

What is duct sealing?

As its name suggests, duct sealing is the act of sealing up any spots in your ductwork that are allowing air in or out. While sealing the ducts in your home, a technician will:

  • Inspect all of your ducts and look for cracks or loose connections
  • Seal any holes or cracks with a mastic tape or sealant
  • Reconnect and tighten any loose or disconnected ducts
  • Tighten the connections between ducts and your registers and grills

How will your home benefit from duct sealing?

Having your ducts sealed has more benefits than you might expect. First and foremost, it increases the energy efficiency of your home because your HVAC system doesn?t have to make up for the conditioned air that?s otherwise lost in your ducts. Along with increased efficiency, your HVAC system will be able to more effectively heat and cool your home when its ducts are tightly sealed.

Duct sealing can also make for a safer indoor environment. From an indoor air quality standpoint, duct sealing prevents airborne contaminants from entering your ducts and being distributed throughout your home. Sealed ducts also prevent combustion gasses from gas-burning appliances from escaping their normal ventilation route and getting back into your home?s air.

If you have any questions about duct sealing, or if you?d like an HVAC system serviced or installed in your home, contact Cabrillo your San Francisco plumbing, heating and cooling company.

Grieving Pet Owners Want Imported Dog Treats Pulled From Shelves

Rita Desollar believes chicken jerky treats imported from China killed her German shepherd, Heidi. Rita Desollar

Rita Desollar believes chicken jerky treats imported from China killed her German shepherd, Heidi.

The Food and Drug Administration isn't sure, but Rita Desollar of Pekin, Ill., feels she knows what killed Heidi, her 7-year-old German shepherd. She feels it was the chicken jerky strips she bought at her local Walgreen's.

Desollar says on the Wednesday before Memorial Day, she gave two pieces of Waggin' Train jerky to Heidi as a treat. A few days later, Heidi was throwing up and "in a lot of distress," she says. By the time the holiday rolled around on Monday, Desollar says, Heidi was convulsing in her bed. She died that day, before Desollar could even take her to the vet.

"I didn't know what happened or why," she tells The Salt. "I got on the Internet and I typed into Google 'What killed my dog?' What came up took my breath away."

?

Desollar found dozens of posts on various websites from people who claim their dogs got sick from eating the same types of chicken jerky treats - all of them imported from China. She also discovered that the FDA was conducting an active investigation into these treats, but the agency has not found any direct evidence that the treats are causing a problem, so it has not issued any warnings.

There haven't been warnings because the FDA hasn't officially concluded that there's anything wrong with these imported pet treats. Though it has received more than 2,000 complaints about them in the past five years, the FDA's tests haven't turned up any contaminant or adulterant in the treats that would give it a reason to issue a mandatory recall.

The FDA didn't respond to our inquiries, but an FDA official recently told a conference of veterinarians that concerns about the treats might be overblown.

"Two thousand complaints since 2007 is an incredibly small subset of the 15 million animals estimated to consume these treats," Dr. Tracy DuVernoy, with the FDA's Coordinated Outbreak Response and Evaluation Network, said last month.

DuVernoy didn't rule out a contamination. But she told the veterinarians that, if there is something wrong with the dog treats, it's something the FDA's scientists haven't been able to pin down. "Since a lot has been ruled out," she said, "it might be a very intricate sort of biological response."

DuVernoy was quoted in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medicine Association's web coverage of the conference.

We reached out to the Waggin' Train company, but they haven't responded to us yet. We will update this post if and when they do.

While the FDA waits and conducts more testing, Desollar doesn't want retailers to wait. A few weeks ago, she created an online petition demanding that Walgreen's, Walmart, Kroger and other retailers yank the treats off their shelves. Within less than a month, the petition has garnered more than 60,000 signatures.

We contacted several of the retailers on Desollar's list. They said they're waiting to take action until the FDA comes to an official conclusion about whether the pet treats are safe or not.

But Desollar says, at the very least, the stores should give their customers full information about what's already happened.

"Just tell me it's under FDA investigation," she says. "I'll make the decision."

University of Notre Dame

The University of Notre Dame has received a five-year, $6.1 million award from the National Science Foundation to support the continuation of the nationwide QuarkNet program, which uses particle physics experiments to inspire students and provide valuable research, training and mentorship opportunities for high school teachers.

Through the QuarkNet program, physicists at Notre Dame, Fermilab and 50 other research institutions will continue to mentor teachers in research experiences, enabling them to teach the basic concepts of introductory physics in a context that high school students find exciting. Faculty, students and teachers work together as a community of researchers, which not only develops scientific literacy in students, but also attracts young students to careers in science and technology.

"The Notre Dame QuarkNet Center is a great example of the mentoring and training provided by particle physicists at universities and national laboratories across the country," said Mitchell Wayne, professor of physics and principal investigator of the NSF grant. "It has become a focal point for educational outreach into our community. Hundreds of local high school students and many of their teachers have done research in particle physics at the center."

In addition, other education and outreach programs have been initiated by QuarkNet teachers, most significantly the Notre Dame extended Research Community (NDeRC), a significant GK-12 effort that brought interactive projects in physics, chemistry, biology and engineering to thousands of local schoolchildren.

One key feature of QuarkNet is the summer research experiences that participating centers offer for teachers and students. During its first year, each QuarkNet Center provides two teachers with eight-week research appointments and develops their expertise as lead teachers. In following years, each center may choose to host a team of high school students and a teacher for a research experience. Recently, 15 teachers, 14 students, nine mentors and a graduate student worked on nine different projects with Notre Dame faculty, including investigations into new scintillators, a presentation of particle physics in the Notre Dame Digital Visual Theater, investigations using the Compact Muon Solenoid e-Lab, and cosmic ray studies.

In the past few years, the reach of QuarkNet has become international, with QuarkNet-sponsored activities such as cosmic ray studies and master classes now being offered to students and teachers around the world. Since 2006, more than 2,100 students have participated in master classes. Currently, students in 25 countries are participating. Held at university and laboratory centers, master classes are institutes for teams of students who become physicists for a day, analyze real experimental data and discuss results through video conferences with physicists and peers across the world. "They are looking at particle events, making determinations, doing counting themselves, coming to their own conclusions," said Notre Dame's Kenneth Cecire, who facilitates master classes in the United States.

Notre Dame was one of the initial QuarkNet Centers. Randy Ruchti, a professor of physics at Notre Dame, started the center 15 years ago when the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) was still a decade away from operation. His vision was to inspire and educate high school students who would be interested and engaged in particle physics, and who would be prepared to work on the LHC project. To reach these students meant reaching out to their teachers and engaging these skilled professionals in the research effort. "The program has worked amazingly well, and is a two-way process: for teachers and students professional development and forefront research experiences; for physicists critical educational input from master teachers and expansion of the research effort to nontraditional, enthusiastic participants," Ruchti said.

Students and teachers in the QuarkNet program helped to build elements of the major Fermilab and LHC experiments over the last decade and are working on new detector upgrades. They are able to look at the latest scientific data from the LHC experiments, including events from the search for a Higgs-like boson, whose discovery was recently announced at CERN, the Center for European Particle Physics, on July 4. Ruchti says, "It just doesn't get more scientifically exciting than this!"

"We are delighted to receive this new award, and we are really looking forward to the next five years of QuarkNet," Wayne said. During the next five years, the Notre Dame QuarkNet faculty will continue all of their present activities and begin some new initiatives, including outreach to the Native American community.

###

The QuarkNet program involves more than 500 high school teachers across the United States. Funding for the program also comes from the U.S. Department of Energy, administered by Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory.

Report: Facebook deleting fake accounts and likes without mercy

11 hrs.

About a month ago, the folks at Facebook announced that they've increased their efforts to delete fake accounts and likes. And now, according to a report, the results of this mission are really starting to show.

TechCrunch's Josh Constine reports that?a third-party tracking service reveals?that popular Facebook pages are suddenly losing a great number of likes. Constine attributes these drops?? which include a loss of over 96,000 fans on Zynga's "Texas HoldEm Poker" page?? to the purging of fake likes and accounts (or "Operation Unlike," as he dubs it).

To be very clear: The accounts which are being deleted are illegimate accounts, those created for the sake of spam or in order to artificially increase likes on a page.?Additionally, likes which?occurred?because of malware, compromised accounts, deceived users or some sort of purchase ??yes, people really buy and?sell likes in bulk? are being removed.

If you are a legit user, as in a real human being and not a spam bot, you don't have anything new to worry about. In fact, you can breathe a little bit more easily since there should be a lot less spam on the social network.

We have reached out to the folks at Facebook to ask for additional information on "Operation Unlike" and will update if we hear anything of interest.?

XXX search engine helps parents block porn

4 hrs.

There's a new (Web) address for all things X-rated. ICM, the company behind Search.xxx, Thursday launched its porn-only search engine that corrals porn sites inside a single .xxx domain.

While some members of the porn industry weren't too happy with Internet authority Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers' (ICANN) decision to authorize the xxx master domain, it may help parents prevent curious kids from seeing adult material.

ICM has made its launch page as convenient as possible for the user ? with no ads, a big search box and three buttons to select a language, a sexual orientation and a light or dark screen (the latter is preferred by experts for?nighttime reading ). The only protection is an age gate that asks users to indicate whether they're 18 years of age or older ? standard protocol on the Internet ? and insufficient to prevent minors from accessing it.

Many porn site operators are using the new .xxx extension. Parents can block this top-level domain from browsers used on family computers and other devices.

Metacerf, the security software company that has partnered with ICM to identify adult pages, offers a free plug-in for Firefox and Chrome?browsers ?that block .xxx websites, as well as other pages found to have adult content. (Porn sites were allowed to keep their .com addresses, so porn can still be found outside the .xxx domain.) A version for Internet Explorer and Safari will be released soon. And, Metacerf also has a family-friendly browser in the works, called Olly, for iPad and iPhone devices.

It's worth mentioning that you can also block .xxx and any other sites you find objectionable from?Google search results. Open a Google search page, click the gear icon at the upper right of the page to select options and then select "search settings." Scroll down the page and click the link "block unwanted sites." Type search.xxx in the box and click the Block button. Competing search engine Bing does not allow users to block specific sites, but like Google, it offers filters designed to eliminate showing links to adult material in search results.

To set the Bing and Google Search filters to "strict," go into your search settings by clicking on the gear icon. Choose "search settings" to see your filter options and set to "strict." That's it for Bing, but Google also lets you lock in your choice. While it's not really a lock that keeps kids from changing the stricter filter, it does add a big graphic element that indicates safe settings are on and sites are blocked. Big bouncing balls at the top of every search page are easy to see even from across the room.

IT Solutions - Cloud | Mobile, IT Solutions - Stay Secure, Small Business IT Management, Small Business Web Strategies, TechRecs: Cool Tools & Hot Topics Trackback

Occasionally our Client Solutions Managers receive calls from clients concerned that their internet connection feels slow and sluggish.? One of the first questions the CSM will ask is if the business is running any web or cloud applications.? The downside of many of the popular business web apps including Skype, Dropbox, Windows file sharing and online backup is they can consume a lot of bandwidth and bog down the overall network.? Additionally, many businesses are suprised to learn that streaming music or videos with Pandora and YouTube will bottleneck bandwidth impacting the connectivity and productivity of the entire business.

A review of the bandwidth usage of these applications can be an eye-opening experience and often provokes an inventory of which apps are out of line with the day-to-day needs of the business. A company policy prohibiting the use of non-essential applications can be time consuming and difficult to enforce and often our clients ask if we have a solution to help manage network traffic and usage policies.

The Launch Pad?s RevITup? WebSentry offers a hosted solution providing complete visibility and control over web content, web applications and web threats. Offering bandwidth optimization to throttle applications like internet radio and videos and website filtering to monitor staff web browsing, the WebSentry provides a window identifying users who are hogging bandwidth or spending more time surfing the web than actually doing their work.? WebSentry?s policy management feature set lets businesses control who, what, when and how the organizations uses the Internet.?? Our RevITup? WebSentry is a hosted solution, meaning there is nothing to buy; just a low monthly fee, and it is managed by our team 24/7. An expert Client Solutions Manager will build your key reports and have them delivered to your inbox daily.

Seeing what your employees are actually doing and gaining visibility on Internet usage is a critical step to securing your network and shaping your bandwidth to support critical applications.
