Travel Guide Information: How to choose a travel insurance policy

When deciding on a travel insurance policy, it can be helpful to look into the details of not only what coverages are provided, but how the company handles claims and emergencies. After all, if you are injured or ill in a foreign country, will you know how to contact a doctor, or where you should go for treatment?

The customer service information, or a list of FAQs can provide a lot of insight into how a company manages claims and what level of assistance you can expect. For example, with some providers you can expect access to a 24-hour hotline to a team of medical professionals who will be able to assess your situation and tell you exactly how to proceed.?

You should expect a company with the ability to speak various foreign languages in order to assure clear communication and the best care. Coordination between your personal physician at home, yourself and/or family members, and the medical professionals at your travel destination is an important service. In some cases, if you need to remain for treatment, they may even provide for a family member to fly to your location to help care for you. If it is better for you to return home, they can arrange that as well.?

Knowing that the company you select will be there to help guide you in seeking treatment if you should need it is just as important as knowing they will pay for necessary costs. You can relax knowing that, even in a serious situation, competent assistance is just a phone call away, especially when the company you select is dedicated to providing the best possible care in any situation that may arise.?

Laptop Computer Home Business: Press Releases And Podcasts ...

Website traffic is something that a lot of people struggle with. And this is especially true with newbies. From the internet to local bookstores, there are a ton of information about how to get traffic to a website simply and easily. But if it was this easy, more people would have success, and less people would be failing.

There are so many different ways to get traffic to your website, and in this article, I want to share a few of those ways. What I'm going to reveal are 2 free traffic methods that I know (and use) that will bring you the results that you are looking for. If you're not a believer in free traffic, trust me... you have no idea of what you're missing. Here's the first traffic method that I want to introduce you to:

1) Press releases

There's a website online called "PRweb" that is the best press release site on the internet. But this acclaim comes with a price. To list a press release with this company, you will have to pay $89 just to list 1 press release. As you can see, this price is very steep. But the results that you can get are amazing.

This company has been around for a while, and I'm confident that you can use it to boost your traffic, sales, customers, and income altogether. In fact, when the big name "gurus" online want to get instant publicity on a day where their brand new product launches... they use PRweb to get them the major publicity that they are looking for. Let's take a look at another traffic technique that you can use in your online business.

2) Podcasts

Not many people online use podcasts, but I think it's a great way to learn new techniques in a snap. Some people just don't have the time to write out their lessons and information, so they simply record themselves, put it on a?computer, turn it into an MP3 file, and then upload it to the podcast directories. The most famous (and best) podcast directory on the internet is iTunes.

iTunes is owned by "Apple", and it's a great venue to promote your podcasts on. Plus it's free! You should be using this technique right away if you want to get the ball rolling on your sales and profits simply and easily. There many people who use podcasts effectively in their business. One person who I know of for sure that does this is financial expert Suze Orman.

She makes sure to mention this at the end of her show, and she offers her entire episodes via MP3 format on iTunes. If shy can do it, you can do it too - especially since you should be learning how to become a marketing expert anyway.

Podcasts and press releases are 2 great ways to get traffic and to boost your online sales in a hurry. The more you do them, the more results you will get, and the more they will benefit your business. Plus... they're free!

Good luck with using these techniques in your online business today.

UFC 155 Results: Cain Velasquez Batters Junior Dos Santos, Reclaims Heavyweight Title (VIDEO/PHOTOS)

LAS VEGAS ? Cain Velasquez waited 13 miserable months for the chance to put the UFC heavyweight belt back around his waist.

When he finally got Junior Dos Santos back in the cage, Cain didn't waste another minute.

Velasquez reclaimed the UFC heavyweight title Saturday night, thoroughly battering Dos Santos on the way to a lopsided unanimous decision in UFC 155.

Velasquez (11-1) took early control of the rematch of his only career loss, flooring the Brazilian champion with a big right hand midway through the first round. Velasquez spent most of the match stalking and pounding on Dos Santos (15-2), who never fully recovered from the first-round shot that left him swollen and woozy.

"I was so tired, but I had to endure," Velasquez said. "My coaches and everybody helped me so much. He's tough, too. ... It feels so good to get this. This is my wife's Christmas present. I promised her I would do this."

Velasquez won every round on every judge's scorecard in the UFC's traditional year-end event in its hometown. The three judges scored the bout for Velasquez 50-45, 50-44 and 50-43. The Associated Press also favored Velasquez 50-44, giving a 10-8 advantage to Velasquez in the first round.

Dos Santos took the UFC belt away from Velasquez in November 2011 in just 64 seconds, earning a first-round stoppage victory with one vicious overhand right in Anaheim, Calif. Velasquez refused to blame a knee injury for his only defeat ? but in the rematch, he demonstrated exactly what he can do at full strength.

"I knew that Junior was a tough striker and he was able to end our last fight that way, so I was prepared for him this time," Velasquez said. "I was able to effectively use my striking and my grappling to control him throughout the fight and get the title back."

Jim Miller won a narrow unanimous decision over Joe Lauzon in a sensationally bloody fight on the undercard, and rising middleweight Costa Philippou stopped Tim Boetsch in the third rounds. Yushin Okami grappled his way past Alan Belcher and Derek Brunson easily beat veteran Chris Leben.

But 12,423 fans bought a record $3.2 million in tickets at the MGM Grand Garden to see the second meeting in what seems certain to be a memorable heavyweight trilogy ? although UFC President Dana White said Velasquez is likely to fight again, probably against Alistair Overeem, while Dos Santos heals.

"I don't know if you saw (Dos Santos) after the fight, but he looked terrible," White said. "It's going to be a while until he starts training again."

Dos Santos' loss was his first in the UFC in 10 fights with mixed martial arts' dominant promotion, and his first defeat anywhere since November 2007. Dos Santos expected the rematch to last longer, but also predicted a second knockout.

Instead, Dos Santos barely avoided getting stopped in the first round, and he headed straight to a hospital after the bout with what White thought was a broken jaw.

"His game was very effective, and tonight he was better than me," Dos Santos said. "It's not usual for me to take a punch, but he walks forward all the time. His takedowns, his grappler game is very effective, so congratulations for him."

Velasquez immediately showed the rematch would bear little resemblance to the first fight, pursuing Dos Santos from the opening bell and quickly backing up the champion. Velasquez then floored Dos Santos with that huge right to the head midway through the round, and Dos Santos had to cover up in the corner while barely surviving an onslaught of strikes and ground-and-pound.

After brusquely swatting aside his stool and choosing to stand in his corner between rounds, Velasquez went to work on the ground in the second, and the former Arizona State wrestler repeatedly got the boxing specialist into bad positions.

Dos Santos struggled to regain his rhythm, and Velasquez managed another takedown early in the third round before repeatedly tagging the champion with shots that left his face discolored and puffy.

At the final bell, Velasquez collapsed on his back at the center of the cage, pointing skyward with both hands. Although Overeem is tops among several heavyweights who would like a title shot, a third bout between Velasquez and Dos Santos can't be too far away.

"Cain Velasquez, like you said (last year), I'm going to come back and I'm going to take my belt again," Dos Santos said.

Dos Santos' win over Velasquez last year in the UFC's first fight on American network television catapulted the hard-punching Brazilian heavyweight into an international spotlight. Both fighters injured their knees in the month leading up to their first fight, but stayed in the bout because of its importance.

Dos Santos defended his title against Frank Mir earlier this year and got a lucrative sponsorship deal with Nike while emerging as one of the promotion's most likable stars.

Miller and Lauzon also turned in one of the UFC's best fights of 2012 in its final show, starting when Miller opened a gaping gash over Lauzon's right eye early in the first round. Blood gushed out of Lauzon's face and onto the canvas, yet he blinked it away and survived the round to a standing ovation.

Lauzon bled substantially for the final two rounds, yet traded big shots with Miller and even took down his fellow veteran, although submission holds were nearly impossible due to the blood slickening both fighters' bodies. Miller narrowly avoided two submission attempts by Lauzon in the final seconds before celebrating his second win in four fights.

"Joe Lauzon is a tough kid," Miller said. "I knew I was going to have to bring my best effort to put him away and I was never able to. That's how good he is on the ground. And even in the last minute, look what he was trying to do to win the fight."

After two dull main-card bouts resulted in wins for Okami and Brunson, Philippou (12-2) and Boetsch entertained the crowd ? but Boetsch (16-5) left his first loss in two years with big cuts on his forehead and nose along with an apparently injured hand. Philippou was impressive in his fifth straight victory, winning as a fairly late replacement for Chris Weidman, his training partner.

In the early fights, veteran Jamie Varner (21-7-1) continued his comeback with a split-decision victory over Melvin Guillard (47-13-3), and heavyweight Todd Duffee (9-2) returned to the UFC after an acrimonious 2 1/2-year absence with a nasty first-round knockout victory over Phil De Fries.

Dealer Pleads Guilty to Smuggling in Largest International Dino Case Ever

A fossil dealer's guilty plea has set the stage for what is most likely the largest dinosaur fossil repatriation in history, according to an attorney representing the President of Mongolia, the country that will receive most of the fossils that federal officials are seizing from fossil dealer and preparer Eric Prokopi.

On Thursday (Dec. 27) Prokopi pleaded guilty to criminal charges related to smuggling fossils and agreed to forfeit a small menagerie of dinosaurs to federal officials. All but one of the dinosaurs in question came from Mongolia, where law makes fossils state property, and among them is a high-profile skeleton that received a $1.05 million bid at auction.

"We have looked into this, and we can't find any instance anywhere when one country has returned to another a lot of dinosaurs this large and this significant that have been looted or smuggled," said Robert Painter, attorney for Mongolian President Elbegdorj?Tsakhia.

The outcome has set precedent in other ways, according to observers and others who are involved in the case. In particular, some believe it will send a message to those involved in the black market for fossils, particularly those taken from Mongolia, which have been widely available for sale.

A long list of dinosaurs

In May, Prokopi put his 8-foot-tall and 24-foot-long (2.4 meters by 7.3 meters) Tarbosaurus bataar specimen up for auction. President Elbegdorj and several paleontologists objected, saying the dinosaur was almost certainly pilfered from Mongolia. The Manhattan U.S. Attorney became involved and sought legal possession of the dinosaur with the intent of returning it to Mongolia and later arresting Prokopi. [See Images of the Smuggled Tarbosaurus Skeleton]

In a plea deal, Prokopi pleaded guilty to three felony counts and agreed to give up his claim on this dinosaur, plus fossils from two other Tarbosaurus bataars, which are Asian relatives of the infamous T. rex; one Saurolophus or duck-billed dinosaur; and two birdlike Oviraptors. In September, federal officials seized another Saurolophus that Prokopi had sold to California-based gallery and auction houseI.M. Chait. A small four-winged Microraptor from China was taken by federal officials before this case began. One of the Tarbosaurus fossils is believed to be in Great Britain.

"We are pleased that we can now begin the process of returning these prehistoric fossils to their countries of origin," Preet Bharara, the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, said in a statement.

Prokopi's prospects

After pleading guilty to charges of smuggling, making false statements on customs forms and dealing in fossils he knew to be illegal, Prokopi faces a maximum of 17 years in prison and a substantial fine. However, his defense attorney Georges Lederman said he believes it is highly unlikely Prokopi will receive anything close to the maximum sentence.

"We are confident that the sentence imposed will be a fair and reasonable one and will take into account all the proactive measures my client has made," Lederman said, noting that Prokopi has cooperated with investigators and, as part of his plea deal, will continue to do so.

The outcome of the case disappointed David Herskowitz, an independent natural history consultant. While employed by auction house Heritage Auctions, Herskowitz arranged for the sale of Prokopi's Tarbosaurus.

"I know Eric, and I know he is not a criminal," Herskowitz said. "I don't believe he knowingly broke any laws, and I believe the only reason why he had to cop a plea was financial and the pressures [of being involved in a court case]."

Prokopi spent a year preparing the Tarbosaurus fossils, which were once rough fossils that made up about 75 percent of a skeleton, to create a complete, mounted specimen with the intent of selling it at auction, Herskowitz said. But the $1 million sale was never completed.

Since releasing a statement in June, in which he described himself as "just a guy in Gainesville, Florida trying to support my family, not some international bone smuggler," Prokopi has been silent.

At roughly the same time federal officials seized the Tarbosaurus bataar, fossils of probable Mongolian origin were easily found in auction catalogs and on eBay. Herskowitz noted that he has seen Mongolian fossils for sale during the 20 years he has been working in the field.

"Mongolia never stepped forward to do anything about the buying and selling of Mongolian fossils, and that was the reason why everyone felt it was legal and OK," Herskowitz said.

A legal question

With the deal still fresh, not everyone agrees about its legal implications. An important issue in the case was the relationship between Mongolian law ? which Prokopi?s civil attorneys said did not clearly make fossils state property ? and U.S. law. This is important because prosecutors were basing the claim that the fossils were stolen on Mongolian law, however, Prokopi was being prosecuted under U.S. law.

From Herskowitz?s perspective, the plea deal doesn?t resolve this issue, but the ambiguity will likely change the market.

??I would believe that no one should be selling Mongolian fossils until this whole thing is resolved,? he said.

Ricardo St. Hilaire, an attorney who practices cultural law, disagreed, saying that the deal created a foundation for using Mongolian law on cultural property to invoke U.S. law on stolen property.

"This conviction should signal to those of us in the legal community and to anybody in the collecting community that Mongolian law has served as the basis to trigger the National Stolen Property Act," St. Hilaire said. Prokopi pleaded guilty to one count of violating this law. [Faux Real: A Gallery of Art Forgeries]

The case and its outcome signal the willingness of the Manhattan U.S. Attorney to pursue cultural property cases, said St. Hilaire, who has been following the case and writing about it on his blog.

Robert Painter, attorney for the Mongolian President, put the significance in more blunt terms: "Smugglers like Eric Prokopi used to think they could do this with impunity. Now they realize this is very serious."

The Mongolian reaction

Mongolian officials have announced plans to establish a temporary facility in the central square of the capital Ulaanbataar to display the dinosaurs once they return, Painter said.

"President Elbegdorj and Mongolians are so grateful for what the U.S. government has done, there is just a tremendous amount of excitement," he said.

The dinosaur's saga from auction block to courtroom has captured Mongolians' attention: A Mongolian media company, shuud.mn, named the dinosaur's story the top event of the year, said Bolorsetseg Minjin, a Mongolian paleontologist who has advocated for the return the dinosaur.

"It is not only on the news, just talking to the people in Mongolia, they really want to know what is going on with the whole case," Minjin said.

Mongolian officials are investigating the illicit trade within their own borders as well, Painter said.

Ultra Suzi Star eying a surprise victory in William Hill - The Home of Betting

Ultra Suzi Star will be looking to cause an upset in the William Hill - The Home of Betting at Newcastle in England on Saturday, December 29, 2012. The competition in the Grade A2 encounter is expected to be a close one, so everyone will be eagerly awaiting the start of action.

None of the greyhounds seem to be in a dominant position right now, so the bookmakers have not rated anyone of them as the outright favourite to succeed. The punters will not enjoy this situation a lot, as they would have wanted a clearer picture in order to place their bets.

Since the overall distance to cover in the race will be 480 metres, the starting positions could make a light difference at the end of the day. Some of the contestants will be looking to be overly aggressive in the beginning, as that will allow them a chance of pressuring their rivals.

On the other hand, most of the runners will not try and press hard once the traps are opened. They will rather opt to save energy and attack in the final moments of the interesting encounter.

The action is scheduled to kick off at 14:42 and all of the greyhounds will be fighting hard to claim the prize money of ?152 in the end. However, only one of them will be able to walk away with glory.

According to the bookies, there is a tie between Droopys Aliyah and Skywalker Air, so both have been rated as the joint favourites to succeed. They are equally talented and will not make life easy for each other.

However, the latter of the two seems to be in a better position, as his performances in recent times have been impressive. He is the only dog attracted towards this race, so his trainer, J. Fenwick, will be expecting him to stamp authority.

He appeared in a Grade A1 race last time around and did a decent job in it, securing the third spot. If he manages to repeat that show, he will be in contention of a victory at Newcastle.

However, Ultra Suzi Star has got the ability to end up on top of the table and she will be looking to attack her rivals, after breaking in from trap number two.

Horse Coaching Requires Persistent Patience ? Sports and ...

If you?ve been riding horses for a while, you?ll probably have experienced the actual joy of riding a horse that?s remarkably highly trained. But did you ever give thought to the amounts of time and energy, and probably money, spent on making that pony that way?

You can?t train a horse in a day, a week or a month, I?d go so far as to say a year, because so far as I am concerned , coaching is an everlasting process. It takes amazing patience and persistence.

When coaching a horse, it is essentially a battle between your patience and the horse?s resistance. If you show implacable patience, you?ll come out the winner. If you lose patience and snap on any particular day, you lost that day?s battle. Lose too many battles and you?ll land up losing the war. Handling horses is like handling youngsters. Anger and disappointment only inflame bad circumstances. Annoyance has no role to play in training or handling a horse, and demonstration of annoyance is a conclusive no-no. Loud remonstrations, cursing and physical action are among the seven deadly sins.

If you cannot accept the unshakable fact that there is no alternative choice to patience, you?ve no business coaching horses. My apologies, but that?s the blunt truth. Each shortcut you take today is a failure waiting to happen along the way some other day. Like most kids, horses learn only through continual repetition. And like with kids, some horses need a load more repetition than other horses.

If you come across any books or videos or audios that guarantee to show you exactly how to teach your pony everything it needs to be taught in one hour, a day or a month, you want to burn that baloney. The single thing you achieve with super fast teaching techniques is disaster. Your pony isn?t designed by nature to be a genius, so don?t try and make him one. When he learns at his very own pace, he learns for life. When he learns at a turbocharged pace, he learns for an hour, or perhaps a day. It is irrelevant that you take days to show him something that to you seems to be the easiest thing in the world to learn. You are not a horse, and your horse is not you. Start every day with your horse brightly, and make sure it ends brightly. If you happen to feel anger building up over something, take the day off and do something, anything that has nothing to do with horses. Tomorrow will always dawn fresh.

As vital as patience is persistence is. Your horse is not going to learn consistently if you?re not teaching him consistently.

For all the undeniable fact that it could take a lot of time, horse training is not a difficult task. The most important challenge is finding the patience needed. Any person who tells you that horse coaching is a difficult task is either too lazy to try it himself, or has screwed up by using shortcuts. Malicious manipulation of whips, bits and spurs will only bring about a rebellious horse, and the more the punishment, the more the defiance.

Newtown trying to give kids a sense of normalcy

NEWTOWN, Conn. (AP) ? The children at the Sandy Hook Elementary school won't be returning to classes for another week, but officials from the town, school district and local agencies are doing their best in the meantime to keep them occupied following a massacre at their school two weeks ago.

The students have not attended school since a gunman killed 20 of their schoolmates and six adults on Dec. 14. They are slated to return to a different school next Thursday.

In the meantime, they've been treated to field trips, toy giveaways and some organized play time.

"A couple of the teachers have done pizza parties," said Janet Robinson, Newtown's school superintendent. "Another met her kids at the library so they could have a little reading time together. The most important thing has been connecting the students back to their teacher and their classmates."

The Newtown Youth Academy, a nonprofit sports center, opened its doors to all kids in town at no cost shortly after the shooting. But from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. last week, the building's turf field, basketball and tennis courts, and giant inflatable obstacle course were reserved just for Sandy Hook Elementary students.

There have been arts and crafts for the smaller kids, as well as face-paintings. Some celebrities, including two members of the Harlem Globetrotters and former University of Connecticut basketball star Tina Charles, also have stopped by to play with the children.

UConn's men's basketball team and its coaches made a trip to the academy Thursday and played games with the kids, posed for photos and signed autographs. "It was great for us to be able to see some smiles on their faces and to spend some time with them," Coach Kevin Ollie said.

On Thursday afternoon, school buses were loading up at the Youth Academy for a trip to Stamford and a larger complex, Chelsea Piers, which also has ice rinks and an indoor swimming pool, said academy owner Peter D'Amico. Sports celebrities, such as Brooklyn Nets forward Kris Humphries, planned to meet them there.

"The idea was to get them away from the house, the television and all the coverage of this tragedy and get them to a place where kids can just be kids," said D'Amico, a longtime youth coach in town.

University of Connecticut psychologist Julian Ford, who spent time counseling in Newtown in the first days after the shooting, said it's important for the grieving process to include an outlet that lets children know that while things will never be the same, it's OK to enjoy life.

"They are all going to be thinking about what happened," he said. "That, unfortunately, is inescapable. But this gives them a chance to say, 'Life is carrying on.' Nothing will be the same, but it's also continuing in ways that it should be."

Some students and their parents on Thursday toured the Chalk Hill school in Monroe, a former middle school being reopened next week for the Sandy Hook students. An open house is planned for Wednesday.

"Getting back into the school is like getting back on the horse," Robinson said. "Some of the scariness is gone once they cross that threshold. They are just so happy to see their teachers."

State police said they plan to keep their contact with the children to a minimum as they continue investigating the shooting.

"We certainly don't want to traumatize them any more than they've already been traumatized," said Lt. J. Paul Vance, the department's spokesman. "If (an interview is) not necessary it won't be done. Our investigators will make all those determinations."

In the meantime, Ford has encouraged parents to keep the kids involved in a normal holiday routine and deal with the tragedy as it comes up, rather than making it a focal point of their lives.

David Connors, who has 8-year-old triplets who attend Sandy Hook, said he and his wife have made play dates with their friends, brought the kids to see family for the holidays and participated in the class get-togethers and recreation events.

"That's been, I think, helpful at least in the short term just to kind of keep them doing things, keep them seeing their friends and being nearby and talking to family," Connors said.

Todd Wood of Newtown has five children, the youngest age 4 and the oldest in college. His children's piano teacher lost a child in the shooting, and the family knows other victims as well.

He said he's found that each child has reacted differently to the tragedy. He said he is not making the shooting the center of his family's life but is not pretending it didn't happen, either.

"We did Christmas, we had our lights here, we've tried to make things as normal as possible," he said. "But we also went down to see the memorials. I don't want to shield them from it. I want to let them grieve in their own way."

Ford said that is healthy. He said children will remember their friends as they go about doing normal kid things.

Chris Wolcott, the sport's academy's operations manager, said the best part of having the kids at the center is that the tragedy is pushed aside, at least for a little while.

"A couple times someone would drop a weight (in the facility's health center) and you would hear a bang and there would be a kid who would freeze for a second," he said. "But that would last a split-second. Most of the time, everyone just had a great time."

Django Unchained - The Family Room - Entertainment Weekly

Andrew Cooper

Let?s start by saying that of course,? Django Unchained is not meant for children. As its R rating and even a modicum of common sense dictate, plenty of thought should be given as to whether anyone under 17 should? bear witness to the cruelty and violence in Quentin Tarantino?s spaghetti Western/slave revenge fantasy.? Most children will not see it. But a lot of teenagers will. Because it?s got a great trailer and Jamie Foxx looks like a badass in it. Because Tarantino has a string of popular movies behind him. Because it feels just a bit naughty yet righteous. Pick your reason.

But in our ?post-racial? world, where the Civil Rights movement feels like ancient history for our children (though it was only about 60 years ago) and slavery is at best something barely covered in history classes, with about the same resonance as the lesson on George Washington crossing the Delaware, does the very existence of a stylized slavery tale require us to try for some sort of balance of the conversation? Or even acknowledgement that it?s a conversation that still needs to be had? Do we need to make sure,?risking heavyhandedness, that the basic facts of the matter are known and can temper the entertainment prism,?either by having actual verbal conversations with kids or by providing them alternative viewing?

Before I saw the movie, I had a conversation with a friend who echoed Spike Lee?s weekend tweet ?American Slavery Was Not A Sergio Leone Spaghetti Western. It Was A Holocaust. My Ancestors Are Slaves. Stolen From Africa. I Will Honor Them.? My friend?s fear was that we have a generation of kids who will have no true understanding of? slavery, but who will flock to a glamorized (if cruel) depiction, assimilating the vernacular into pop culture, horrifying their elders and thumbing their noses at a past they don?t feel connected to. That last bit?s a rite of passage, right?

I realized that I?d subconsciously had a similar concern before I went to see the movie, which, for the record, I found almost equally entertaining and disturbing, what with the unflinching brutality. But even though I had no intention of my teen son seeing it, I also know that he may at some point without my permission and even if he doesn?t, he?ll hear about it from friends or just some other teen and probably in less than mom-friendly terms. So when I stumbled across an airing of Roots on Monday while we were both in the living room I took it as a chance to talk about its significance in pop culture and its depiction of slavery. His ears perked up and he mentioned that he?s pretty sure he?d heard about it in school or something. We talked about the brutality of it all and the economic system that it was in addition to the social ill. Then his eyes glazed over and he clearly wanted to get back to whatever was going on in his phone.

As adults, we can parse the many things the filmmaker and actors are infusing the film with ? the adult sensibilities that informed the whole thing.?The understanding of the difference between what actually happened during slavery and the entertainment that appears on the big screen. But that?s not necessarily the case for teens. They don?t always get the big difference between fiction and nonfiction. They suspect that all historical movies are about as accurate as a documentary. They are far from stupid and are often more pop-culture savvy than their parents. But they are also impressionable and still soaking up information that will shape their lives.? So for every film that muddles an important issue (and here I?m focusing on slavery but it can apply to a number of other topics), are we obliged to make sure our kids have a pop-culture counterpoint? Do we need to make sure we get in a Lincoln for every Django? For every Inglorious Basterds do we make sure there?s a Schindler?s List viewing?

Or am I overthinking it?

LeBeau intends on returning to Steelers in 2013

PITTSBURGH (AP) ? Armed with a promise from his beloved defensive coordinator that he wouldn't retire without first informing his players, Ryan Clark threatened to avoid Dick LeBeau.

"I didn't want to hear it, so I've told him, 'If you try to leave, well, you didn't see me and tell me, so you can't,'" said Clark, the Steelers' free safety. "'That would make you not to be a man of your word, and I know you as such.'"

Clark needn't worry. The 75-year-old LeBeau has every intention of returning in 2013 for what would be a 55th consecutive season in the NFL.

LeBeau opened his first meeting of the week with his defense by telling players he'll come back for a 10th season as Pittsburgh's defensive coordinator.

LeBeau, a Hall of Famer, publicly will only say his status is in the hands of head coach Mike Tomlin. But with the defense ranked No. 1 in the NFL for the second consecutive season and fifth time in nine years, there's little reason to think Tomlin would make a change.

"Let's just say I really like Pittsburgh and I really like working for the Steelers," LeBeau said after practice Thursday. "Coach Tomlin will tell you if he wants me back or not. It will be up to Mike."

Asked as a follow-up if he would come back if asked, LeBeau smiled and said, "I love Pittsburgh."

The city has come to love LeBeau, too, after he orchestrated a defense that has ranked in the top five of the league in 10 of his 11 seasons as defensive coordinator. LeBeau also held the job in 1995-96 under former head coach Bill Cowher.

Not even the famed Steel Curtain defenses of the 1970's ? statistically, at least ? can match what LeBeau's units have accomplished. Only two Steelers teams during their run of four Super Bowl titles in six years under Chuck Noll were No. 1 in total defense.

Since LeBeau returned for his second stint with the franchise in 2004, the Steelers have been to three Super Bowls ? winning two ? and have had the No. 1 defense five times.

"We know he's the best in the game," veteran linebacker Larry Foote said. "I think everybody else around the league knows it. A lot of times in the games it turns into a chess match, and he wins his share."

Known as the architect of the so-called "zone blitz," LeBeau's teams have been known for the confusion they cause and for their pressure on opposing quarterbacks. His record against rookie starting quarterbacks over the past nine years is 14-2.

His resume after more than a half-century in the league earns the respect of players ? but it's his calm and fatherly demeanor that endears those who play for LeBeau to him.

They openly campaigned for LeBeau to get into the Hall of Fame for his 14-year career with the Detroit Lions that included 62 interceptions. LeBeau wept when, on New Year's Day 2006, his players en masse showed up for a game against Detroit wearing his throwback No. 44 Lions jersey.

"One of the joys of coming to work as a Pittsburgh Steeler free safety is getting to see Coach Lebeau every year," Clark said.

LeBeau, who was head coach of the Cincinnati Bengals from 2000-02, doesn't look like a man who will be 76 when next season opens.

"He's like a grandfather ? but I don't want to say grandfather because he doesn't really act like a typical grandfather," Foote said. "He's a man of a lot of jokes and wisdom and he encourages everybody.

"He can get around, especially when all his buddies come in. He's always screaming, always running around, doing push-ups."

Keenly aware of where his defense ranks, LeBeau could have gone out with a team that has a chance of finishing the season No. 1 in the NFL in total defense, passing defense and rushing defense. Heading into the season finale Sunday against Cleveland (5-10), the Steelers are No. 2 in rushing defense and No. 1 in the other two categories.

But those stout numbers haven't translated into enough victories this season, with Pittsburgh (7-8) set to miss the playoffs for only the third time in LeBeau's 14 seasons on the staff. He was Cowher's defensive backfield coach from 1992-94.

Despite the gaudy overall rankings this season, LeBeau's Steelers weren't the "closers" they were in the past. Four times, Pittsburgh blew a fourth-quarter lead. The Steelers also uncharacteristically finished in the bottom half of the NFL in sacks and turnovers forced.

"The truth of the matter is we didn't get off to a really good start on defense this year," LeBeau said. "I don't think it was ever quite as bad as it was perceived to be, but we weren't playing the way we wanted to play. For, I'd say over a month and a half now, our third down numbers have been good. We got a little behind early in all phases, but these guys stayed together and played pretty doggone good defense and got us back to where we like to be, up near the top of the bunch."

As usual, LeBeau credits the players for the defense's success. That's just one reason why they share such adulation for him.

"He sets the tone," Foote said. "He's the reason. He always brings us guys together. He puts us in the right situation to make plays."

Notes: TE Heath Miller was named team MVP after a vote by the players. Miller, who has a team-high 71 receptions and is tied for the team lead with eight touchdowns, had surgery Thursday to repair multiple torn ligaments in his right knee. He is the first tight end to win the award. ... RT Mike Adams was named team rookie of the year and NT Casey Hampton was given the "Chief Award" for cooperation with the media.

23 Dec

I installed some speed reading apps and tested them. I?ve so far notices a few ?categories? or groups of equals:

  • One kind exists mostly from showing a text word by word in the middle of the screen. Showing each word a very short time and so you can read at a high wpm because you never need to move your eyes.
  • Another kind is merely a speed reading article disguised as app.
  • Another kind is no speed reading app but just a reading app with a fancy name.
  • Yet another kind is training in the form of news/actually.
  • And the last kind is a training app, not for your own stuff but purely for training.

I only tested them quickly and unions talked the non-interesting. But they aren?t quite what I?m looking for. Maybe I should write one myself for training and guided reading.

The Constitution in 2013: Gains or losses on rights?

The Supreme Court?the place in America where the Constitution most often gets new meaning?moves into 2013 after a momentous year of re-examining the core constitutional structure of the U.S. government. As the New Year unfolds, the court switches its center of attention from constitutional architecture to constitutional rights.

350px-Supreme_Court_US_2010Many other public actors, of course, contribute to constitutional development every year, but often that merely sets the stage for the court to have the final word.

In a series of decisions in 2012, the court did some alterations on the constitutional division of power between national and state governments.

It gave Congress power to move toward nationwide health insurance even while giving states more veto power over some federal spending. It narrowed somewhat the authority of states to limit the rights of undocumented immigrants living within their borders. It reminded federal judges not to go too far to second-guess the states? legislative redistricting process. And it restricted the power of states to curb heavy political campaign spending by corporations.

The net effect of that was twofold: the court?s own powers were enhanced, along with those of the other two federal branches, and the long-term trend of shifting power toward Washington and away from state capitals was not significantly interrupted.

What comes next for the court?partly by its own choice, partly by the actions of other public actors?is a heavy concentration on individual rights. But there is no certainty that, when the final decisions emerge by next summer, the results will expand rather than narrow those rights.

The justices will be deciding two major cases dealing with race relations. They will decide whether public colleges and universities may continue to use race as a factor in choosing their new freshman classes, and they will decide whether history?s most successful voting rights law?the Voting Rights Act of 1965?has outlived its constitutional justification.?? Both college affirmative action plans and minority voting rights appear to be at some risk.

The court will get its first close look at recent efforts to make voting more difficult, especially for the poor, when it examines whether states can demand documentary proof of U.S. citizenship before a voter may register.? Moreover, the court will probably be examining anew the constitutionality of requiring photo IDs for voters at the polling place.

On affirmative action, the court is likely to decide whether a states? voters have the power to direct a complete end to college affirmative action plans, even if those survive the year?s basic constitutional test before the court.

The justices will be making a historic foray into the newest cultural clash in America, over whether gay and lesbian couples will be allowed to marry, and whether they will qualify for federal marital benefits. The court has taken on two cases that potentially could result in either a sweeping decision on same-sex marriage, or a narrower ruling that puts off the ultimate constitutional reckoning on such unions.

There very likely will be a review of the constitutionality of at least a part of the new federal health care law that was not examined at the court?s last term: the Affordable Care Act?s mandate that employers provide for their workers, free of charge, health insurance coverage for the leading forms of birth-control drugs and methods. That mandate has been challenged by a wide array of religious schools, colleges, and hospitals, and by profit-making businesses run by religious families or executives whose faith counsels against medical methods that may lead to abortion. They argue that the contraceptives mandate violates their right to religious freedom.

A spate of new anti-abortion laws passed by state legislatures over the past year may also begin to put that issue back before the justices in 2013.

It is almost a certainty that there will be attempts to induce the court to spell out further the scope of gun-bearing rights under the Second Amendment. The most important single issue is whether those rights extend beyond the home, and beyond self-defense at home?the only site and activity so far recognized by the justices for the exercise of the right to ?keep and bear arms.? Other gun rights issues may arise if the federal government takes new steps to deal with mass shootings like that earlier this month in Newtown, Connecticut, but test cases over any such initiatives may take some time to reach the justices.

In the field of international human rights, the court is expected to decide whether multinational corporations may be sued in U.S. courts for their role in atrocities committed in foreign lands.

The court also may be drawn into new constitutional controversy over the government?s use of military courts at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to try those suspected of acts of terrorism. Among the key issues is whether foreign nationals held at the Navy prison on the island of Cuba have constitutional rights during their war crimes trials.

All of this array of rights issues is expected to be faced by the same nine justices. At this point, there is no sign that any of the justices is considering retirement, and all appear to be in good health. Openings, or at least one, may be more likely later in President Obama?s second term in the White House.

Lyle Denniston is the National Constitution Center?s Adviser on Constitutional Literacy. He has reported on the Supreme Court for 54 years, currently covering it for SCOTUSblog, an online clearinghouse of information about the Supreme Court?s work.

A gusty winter storm slammed southern Illinois, as well as much of the rest of the country, leaving roads covered in ice and snow and prompting authorities to warn of whiteout conditions that could significantly reduce drivers' visibility.

However, most of the large urban areas will be spared the worst of it ? instead getting heavy rain and dangerous winds.

?It will be a stormy night on the East Coast,? says Tom Kines, senior meteorologist at AccuWeather.com in State College, Pa. ?The major cities could get wind gusts over 40 miles per hour and along the coast the gusts could be over 50 miles per hour.?

With its strong winds and potential for icing, the storm could lead to power outages, dangerous driving conditions, and lengthy airport delays.

?Definitely with the winds up, there could be some power outages from falling limbs,? says Mark Ressler, lead meteorologist at The Weather Channel in Atlanta. ?And, it looks like with all the snow, people could have difficulty getting around for a short period of time.?

Wednesday morning, parts of Indiana were under blizzard warnings. Those conditions were expected to spread into Ohio, Pennsylvania, and western New York State during the day. The extreme conditions are expected in New England by Wednesday night.

?As the storm moves East, it may not meet the criteria for a blizzard, but it will look like a blizzard,? says Mr. Kines. ?There will be blowing and drifting snow.?

Many of the cities in the direct path of the storm ? including Cleveland, Ohio, Erie, Pa., and Buffalo, N.Y. ? can expect up to a foot or more of snow. Rural areas in Vermont and New Hampshire can expect over a foot of the white stuff.
